All this week we are offering free mini assignments in preparation for the 2015 Global Talent Search. Yesterday was all about socks. Today your mission is to explore color nuances.
Mini assignment 2: Fifty shades of blue
What I’ve done below is taken five hues of blue (gouache and watercolor) and added Naples Yellow to each. Look at the results! Softer shades.
For this mission, take some blue paint, add Naples Yellow, and see what you get. Why Naples Yellow? Naples Yellow is a flat yellow and white, so it dulls, lightens and warms the color. Fun fact.
Then try the following:
- Add more Naples Yellow to each and see what happens
- Add white to each and see what happens
- Add more white to each and see what happens
- Add water to each and see what happens
- Add your own experiments and see what happens. How many shades of blue can you create?
If you don’t work traditionally, take a photo of a muted, nuanced blue color (or colors) you find on your travels or around your home and think about how you could use that color in your artwork.
Then, share your shades of blue on social media, including the hashtags #mygtsprep #blue. To make sure I see it, please include the following:
- If sharing on Twitter #mygtsprep #blue @artthatsells
- If sharing on Facebook #mygtsprep #blue @makeartthatsells
- If sharing on Instagram #mygtsprep #blue @lillarogers
Having a few shades of blue under your belt will be useful when you get the first Global Talent Search assignment, which will be released soon!
