So many things I have learned through the ‘Illustrating Children’s Book’ course. I have learned how to develop a great illustrations for children’s books, how to see and read the text and make characters (poses, emotions) and enviroment the best possible. The course showed me inside information from the children’s book industry and how to contact the art director. And the most important, to be kind to yourself, to believe that I can make it.

We had a book fair a few days ago and I decided that my next step is, after I finish my portfolio, to send it to the largest book publisher in my country. I got a contact of an art director on a book fair and now is up to me. I know I can do it and for this I can be thankful for Lilla and Zoe to teach me everything I should know for illustrating childrens books. In this stage I’m brave enough to show my work to publishers.

House socks. See more here

My house socks are inspired my backyard: ducks, plants, trees, flowers, mountains. The house I grew up in is white with a red roof. I learned to draw icons in MATS A and B and applied that to my sock designs. I look forward to continuing to develop my skills and expanding my line of products outside of socks, and building up my portfolio of artwork. I took MATS A and B right as I was starting my business of patterned socks, and it was a wonderful experience and improved my work greatly.

This Christmas Card design shows a humorous situation for a custom portrait holiday card.

The courses have helped me go a step further in each drawing I produce. I’m looking forward to 2017 as my best year yet while I continue to work through my MATS course content!

Holiday greeting card for grandparent to granddaughter

I have taken: MATS A, MATS B, Bootcamp and Home Decor

My artwork has evolved more in the year that I have been taking MATS classes than it has my whole life! The classes gave me the structure so I could learn to work within in a brief, but they also gave me enough freedom to find which way of working was best for me.

The facebook groups have been a creative haven to interact with like-minded folks where I can find feedback, encouragement and advice. I’ll continue taking MATS B which I am currently in. I can’t wait to see where it takes me after having such a productive year already with MATS!

Lisa Miles-Creative Sofa-Just Chill-Lilla Rogers Festive Showcase 2016

‘Just Chill’ Watercolour Christmas Card

I have taken MATS Bootcamp and MATS A. My style and techniques have evolved and progressed whilst taking MATS classes. I have looked at subject matter and colour palettes that I would not have considered previously.

I have realised which aspects I really enjoy in my art; a bit of humour or happiness, cute animals and people. The classes have also helped me find out a great deal of useful information about various markets that I would not otherwise have had access to. This also helped me consider markets and products that I would not have even thought about.

Through the Facebook groups I have realised that many artists have the same types of concerns about their work and processes. I have also been introduced to lots of useful resources, art suppliers, printers etc and gained valuable information about the industry in general. In 2017 I will continue to develop my art by challenging myself to learn about new techniques, use new materials and to branch out further into different subjects.
