It’s prep time for our annual Global Talent Search (GTS) – one of the most closely-watched events in our industry. This year, we’re offering a series of five mini assignments to get you ready to rock the competition, which will be shared daily here on the blog all this week. If you have not yet registered, book your place here and then dive into these ‘minis’ to help you get ready for the main competition.
Mini assignment 1: Sock research
Your first mission is to do research on socks, and take photos of them. What socks do you see out there? What socks do you like? What do you have in your sock drawer? Are they patterned? Textured? Hand-knit? What about on the bus, or in the town? What socks are other people wearing?
Socks tell you a lot about:
- trend
- fashion
- pattern
- color
You can also draw socks, instead of just taking photos. Use your imagination here – you can design whatever you like, and feel free to include leggings, tights, and the like.
Then, share what you find or draw on social media, including the hashtags #mygtsprep #socks. To make sure I see it, please include the following:

- If sharing on Facebook #mygtsprep #socks @makeartthatsells
- If sharing on Instagram #mygtsprep #socks @lillarogers
Why socks? You will understand more when you get the first Global Talent Search assignment (it’s an awesome one!) But for now, go nuts on your socks research.

Whimsical at best! Loved the ideas that keep me inspired. Socks are like sculpture and art in one. We all can’t help but see cool personality when you see colorful socks. Loved it Lilla good one!!
LOVE SOCKS. It’s the thing my mom still buys me every year, socks with wild random crazy patterns. I have giraffe-print socks, stripes, flowers, skulls, among others :)

Thoroughly enjoyed sketching my sock illustration. I only bought the pair of socks that I drew, a couple of weeks of ago and was spoilt for choice as to which design I wanted to wear. There are so many fab designs on the market at the moment. Great mini project!!
