Carrie_ChapkoI’m taking MATS B and this is my submission for the scrapbook assignment. I love that art for this market could be used for other markets as well.

What have you enjoyed most so far about the course?

The thing that I’ve enjoyed most about my MATS experience is that I am pushing myself to make art that I wouldn’t normally think to create and experimenting with different mediums and styles.

How is the MATS class helping you grow?

I’ve found the online community of artists to be very valuable, everyone is very supportive and the art is inspiring.

What are you discovering about yourself?

I am learning a lot about myself and my process, and feel like I’m beginning to have a style emerge.

How would you describe the class to a friend?

I would tell a friend that the class is really great for building their portfolio and for meeting some really talented and inspiring people along the way. It really is the best thing I’ve done to give my art the boost it needed.

Above is my submission for the MATS B Baby Apparel brief on the theme of Lucky Charms.

I did MATS A last year and really enjoyed it so am really excited to get stuck into MATS B now.

What have you enjoyed most so far about the course?

It’s great to have briefs to work to as I struggle quite a bit with making a start on things.  When there are too many options I tend to get a bit overloaded and end up doing nothing as I can’t decide what to actually start with!  Therefore, a little bit of structure works great for me!

How is the MATS class helping you grow?

I have a degree in surface pattern but graduated 12 years ago now and followed a different route. I am loving getting back into drawing and pattern making again and these courses are helping me to rekindle my love of it.

How would you describe the class to a friend?

I describe the course to my friends as an amazing way to find your inner creative being and a great place to meet like minded people to share and be inspired by.

Sharon Montgomery

SHARON_MONTGOMERY_MATSB_WK2

I am currently taking MATS B. I took the live MATS A course in the fall of 2015.

The piece above is for the Baby Apparel assignment with the theme of “Lucky Baby”.

How is the MATS class helping you grow?

The MATS class is helping me grow by providing a safe space to explore ideas, but with a community for feedback. I can explore ideas on my own all I want, but if I’m unsure of all my work, it’s not helpful. The community of other like-minded individuals is a vital component of the MATS courses, as is the presence of highly talented individuals. It makes me push myself much further than if I was doing this alone.

What are you discovering about yourself?

I have discovered that I am externally motivated, and highly so. I am a punctual and reliable creative if I have deadlines and others counting on me. When left to my own, in the past, I would flounder about. Too many choices. Too many directions in which to wander. I have found the self-paced classes challenging for these reasons. But the funny thing is, since completing MATS Home Decor, I have suddenly found my ability to focus and complete the work on my own time, without a deadline! This is HUGE! Through the live courses, I’ve been able to hone in on what it is I enjoy. So now, the self paced course doesn’t seem so daunting.

How would you describe the class to a friend?

I would describe the MATS courses to a friend as highly motivating for artists who want to make art for a living. They have the  ability to try on lots of different markets to see what suits them best and a safe place to explore and hone their style, even if they don’t know what that is yet!
