MARENTHE OTTEN_SENSE OF WONDER_HD2_WK4

Marenthe OttenIt was music to my ears when the task was set – being allowed free rein with lettering is always a dream. Also ceramics are absolutely MY THING! I adore cooking and I think I have about 20 smashing serving platters and much much more ceramics at home. Im a crazy collector:-)

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?
It was fabulous being part of this group. The assignments were FAB, the other students were so kind, open and helpful, I learned so much. It forced me in a gentle way to get out of my comfort zone. It taught me how to build a bridge between designer and buyer.
What did you discover about yourself?
I designed things I didn’t know I was capable of. And leaving my comfort zone isn’t that bad!!! :-)
How would you describe the course to a friend?
These classes have an enormously good and magical vibe. It helps you to discover your strength and teaches the possibilities. It shows you how to present yourself in a professional way.

MeAndBrushesSquareThis was my submission for Week 4, ceramics. It is my favorite because it reminds me of a personal turning point in the class when I finally embraced what I really wanted to create instead of what I thought I should create.

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?

In today’s competitive art-licensing world, it is so valuable to know your audience, the art director. The Home Décor class is brilliantly designed to teach the artist how to think like an art director. I grew tremendously though the process of actually designing products as an art director would. This enabled me to critique my work in a much more productive way, and as a result, my art became that much better. Additionally, now I have a lot more confidence in being able to communicate my ideas to art directors.

What did you discover about yourself?

Not only did I discover that I love telling a story through home décor design, but within the supportive class environment, I also discovered how important it is to embrace your unique vision, and how that results in success on many levels.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

It is an amazing gift to yourself to be able to experience the magic of MATS, and the Home Décor class is the ultimate MATS experience which pushes you beyond what you may think you are capable of doing. Lilla and Margo know how to bring out your very best!

anitaThis is a sampling of my favorite designs from the class. I like them because they are items I would buy. They are fun, joyful and unusual.

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?
I really had to think hard about how to design for specific products and textiles
What did you discover about yourself?
It showed me that I have a long way to go with patterns and decorative illustration, but I have a knack for product ideas.
How would you describe the course to a friend?
Challenging, but very rewarding.

Love Midge

BRIDGETTE_BURTON_AUNT_MADGE'S_FARM_HD1_WK2
profile photoThis is my favorite image because I love how the quirky flowers turned out. During this week I decided to create a story for my images and immediately thought of a quirky aunt that owned a farm and loved her garden. But, a quirky aunt doesn’t just grow your typical flowers, she grows things that make her smile and show who she is. She may not win the blue ribbon at the County Fair, but she will turn heads!
How did the Home Décor class help you grow?
The home decor class really helped me loosen up my illustration skills. During my day job as an electric utility distribution designer, everything has to be straight and exact. I have a hard time loosening up after a long day of doing that work and then be able to just draw.
What did you discover about yourself?
At first, I discarded a lot of artwork that had uneven lines or didn’t seem “right.” After awhile I began to embrace the imperfect and enjoy drawing again. Even if my lines were shaky or my images were tilted a bit! I still struggle with this transition, but this class helped me discover that I can actually embrace my imperfect.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

If you are ready to put in some hard work, get encouraged and cheered on from people that you have never met, and fall in love with your art again, then you need to take this course. It’s bootcamp for your artistic soul!
