KATE BILLINGSLEY

katebillingsleyceramicsboard

This is my collection of teacups, saucers and plates for ceramics week. It combines detailed gold linework with flashes of watercolour against rich jewel tones. This was the week I had a few revelations, and I finally figured out my art style. I tend to go for darker, richer colours as a rule, but this was also the week I finally understood why contrast is so important – hence the paler parchment background to make everything pop.

How did the home decor class help you grow?

I was an artist unsure of my style – I liked to do so many different things, and didn’t understand how to bring it all together. But just as Lilla advises, I kept at it – kept making art, and finally it all fell into place. Because the course is so intense it really pushes you to make so much, to explore so much – and (importantly for me) teaches you that you CAN be disciplined! It’s really amazing what you discover you are capable of, when you see the quantity and quality of the work you have at the end.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

The course is so valuable even just for the amazing and supportive facebook community – it is such a lovely, safe and supportive place to ask each other questions, share knowledge, and just be generally supportive and uplifting. The ability to ask Lilla and Margo questions during the course was fantastic as well, to get a more in-depth idea of how the industry works, what to do, how to pitch. I left the course so much more confident, and with a direction and a plan.

ASPA GIKA | ASPA GIKA STUDIO

aspagika_portrait_325This is my favorite board because adding the notes, patterns and PMS swatches makes the board ready for any presentation.

How did the home decor class help you grow?

The HOME DÉCOR class has helped me grow in many different ways. It expanded my horizons as an illustrator and designer, and it completely pushed me out of my comfort zone. Lilla and Margo are such an inspiration. Their reviews, feedback and encouragement helped me elevate my art to the next level, and not to be afraid to experiment with new techniques and color pallets. They helped me visualize my artwork on different objects and surfaces, while at the same time the realistic creative briefs and time schedules taught me discipline and efficient time management. I really enjoyed the minis every week, and especially the Facebook feed from my Home Décor class friends, who were all so supportive, creative, and amazing.

What did you discover about yourself?

I discovered that I could push myself one step further every week so that my designs would look better than I initially imagined. I learned that I always need to allow myself some extra time at the end of the assignment so that I can take a step back and review and refine my design. The course has changed the way that I see my work and made me realize that the sky is the limit.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

I would definitely recommend the course to a friend who would like to create a new body of work for the home décor market. The course is intense, but you see your work improve quickly and at the end you have a complete body of work for your portfolio. The fellow artists are also incredibly supportive. Just watching everyone’s growth and unique style is an inspiration itself.

PORTIA MONBERG

PORTIA_MONBERG_KOOLAIDSUMMER_HD3_WK3

portia_light_portraitI’m sharing my image from the glass week because it represents the moment everything began to click for me in the class. My graphic whimsical style and the assigned color palette came together in a way that made me very happy. It definitely felt like an aha moment that would not have happened without the discipline and structure of the class combined with the extremely insightful reviews by Lilla and Margo.

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?

The class helped me learn how to use my graphic style in a way that would be appealing on a variety of substrates. I also learned how to create a variety of icons that are different but at the same time related visually.

What did you discover about yourself?

Over the years I’ve really struggled to find my signature style. I tend to work in a number of different mediums and styles. In this class I discovered that I do have at least one style that I can build on in a consistent way.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

If you are looking for a challenging and fun class in with incredible community support, I highly recommend the Home Decor class.
