A design for a Christmas card based on a MATS assignment involving Christmas cookies!

I’ve taken Children’s books, bootcamp, Home Decor and MATS A and B. MATS has been a major contributor to my artistic growth this year, I’ve pushed my boundaries and professionalism through the classes. I’ve also built a whole array of new work for my portfolio and some of this has ended up in card designs, home decor products and other client projects.

FRANCESCA IANNACCONE

Magical Holiday - Francesca Iannaccone

Set of 8 Holiday cards.

I have taken Bootcamp over the last 3 years. I sign up because it gives me such an amazing amount of new work for my portfolio – whole collections can grow from one idea. Every time I take Bootcamp my work grows a lot, encouraged by the wonderful Facebook camaraderie and the tips Lilla gives in every assignment. It also encourages me out of my comfort zone – I draw people much more than I used to!

2017 Goals: I intend to keep growing my art in 2017 with more courses and more commissions.

KELLY FREDERICK MIZER

I just finished taking the children’s book illustration course with Lilla and Zoe. I am sad to see it end, but I learned so much and am now very energized about making new works for 2017. The class was the first MATS class I have participated in and I am hooked. There is something about having deadlines that is inspiring. Zoe and Lilla have me thinking about expressions and gestures in a way that I hadn’t prior to now.  Plus, I have learned to trust my own drawing and painting style when it comes to illustrations. That has been a goal of mine for awhile, but the course forced me to go for it.

2017 Goals: In 2017, I am reworking many of the illustrations that I created for the children’s books I have written. In the meantime, please consider showcasing this festive holiday Rudolph textile for your showcase. It is available for licensing.

caitlin_murray__Hippo_Blue_Xmas_in_Oz
Scene from recent range commissioned for Hippo Blue Wonderful Christmas in Oz.

I was asked to create a Christmas in Oz world and then extend the art to a number of  different products including: Activity Book, Colouring Postcards, Card Game, Wall Decals & Stickers, Santa Sack, Jigsaw Puzzle and Gift Cards. The products are all available online and can be personalised with your child’s name. There is also the option to choose the gender, hair colour and skin colour for your child, so they will receive a very special personalised gift this Christmas!

MATS has helped me really develop my own style. The classes have been great for my folio and a lot of the work I created during the classes has gone on to secure me actual jobs in the industry. A number of my MATS illustrations have also been licensed as greeting cards. Through the Facebook group I have met some fabulous, like minded illustrators and have connected with a number of them in real life. I was contacted recently by a fellow MATS alumni to take part in a group exhibition here in Melbourne, this has led to art sales and licensing deals. So, it’s been brilliant really! You never know where things will lead …

2017 goals: I have a permanent part time job illustrating and designing for a toy company in Melbourne which I adore.  I also have a number of on-going illustration clients. My plan is to keep growing, keep developing my style and keep putting stuff out there. Plant seeds and see what grows! If I knew exactly what was going to happen then that would be boring. I also have a fine art practise under the name PESKY. I am represented by Port Jackson Press in Melbourne and will be having a solo show mid way through next year, so there is a lot to look forward to!

This nativity scene is featured on my Christmas cards and gift tags this season. They can be purchased in my etsy shop. I’ve taken MATSA and MATSB and it’s helped me to develop my color, design and process for achieving it. Since then I’ve published a Children’s Book, worked with agents and continued to expand my own business. I’ve learned many dos and don’ts in the process and look forward to using that knowledge in 2017 for more expansion and creativity.
