Kari Percival

karipercivalI printed up this wood cut, “Home” just in time for the holidays. A cut away view shows the inside a beaver lodge in winter under the snow. A family member who is returning from a swim greets family members snug inside. This hand carved wood cut is printed by hand with water based inks on acid-free paper. It’s 14″ x 17″. I’ve taken MATS Bootcamp and GTS both 2015 and 2016, and I completed the MATS Children’s Book Illustration class. The classes have helped me evolve by providing an active, international on-line community of artists who encourage each other.

Lilly’s advice to “Be you with a vengeance,” and to work hard on your craft has really helped me re-discover the joy I have with art making and how to go after that joy and share it with others. I am so excited to be building my children’s book illustration portfolio, and in 2017 I’d like to make my wood cut style into a unique selling point for children’s book illustration.

Festive Greetings cards

I have taken MATS A and B twice! The first MATS Home Dec Course and The First Illustrating Children’s Books course!

All the work that I did in MATS A & B helped me build up my portfolio to a place where I was able to get the attention of some agents. I am now represented by Bright, and doing lots of lovely new jobs.

I wanted to create a super fun repeat pattern that would be great for wrapping paper, and these happy Christmas ornaments just bubbled out! They would be so awesome for a variety of applications – fabric, group a few of the icons together for a holiday greeting card, and they’d be amazing as real live three dimensional felt Christmas tree ornaments!

I learned so much from each class. Like, so much. I experimented with a ton of different art materials and techniques, I created a ton of art, and in the process I feel like I’m finally at a place where I have an art style. I’ve transitioned away from the web design path my career had taken and steered my ship solidly back into illustration waters, I’ve signed with an agent, and there’s so many exciting new opportunities on the horizon for 2017! It’s a tad too soon to mention specifics yet, but I just can’t wait for the new year!

LAYOUT CARD

A holiday greeting card using our cookie images.

I attended the MATS A course in May-June and the MAT B course in August-September and I was fully satisfied with both the quality and materials, both of their effectiveness! I always felt encouraged and supported by Lilla’s videos and the other students comments. It was a wonderful experience that I intend to repeat again and again!!!

I learned above all that to grow, know, try and figure out what should be the best way to express our art is always to be engaged in new projects, even those that are most difficult.
In moments of discouragement or self-doubt …. relate everything that we did and realize how much we have learned through our efforts is a good way to motivate ourself to continue and not give up!

The next course to which I would subscribe is BOOTCAMP and I would love if there was also one on LETTERING.

Lilla Bölecz

lillabolecz_forestchristmas

‘Forest Christmas’ is a dreamy, delicate watercolour illustration of a festive moment in nature for all who believe that magic is around us in every moment. Subtle blue shades, bold, vibrant reds and whimsical animal characters make this illustration joyful and merry. It’s available on several products including tote bags, blankets, mugs or pillows. I haven’t finished MATS-A yet, but it’s already been eye-opening and had a great impact on my view of thinking about and making art. The class goes deep into the different markets of illustration and answers a lot of questions I’ve had about them since a long time. The assignments are exciting and in the same time pushing me beyond what I thought I’d be capable of. I’m really looking forward to go through all the topics and assignments and also to enrol in a live class next time because Lilla is such an inspiring, motivating teacher!
