Lilla’s Top Picks: MATS B FB Live Review 2017/Editorial Market/Map

Lilla Rogers hosted an art review of our students’ incredible work created in our self-paced e-courses. Students were given fascinating assignments—one for the Wall Art market and one for the Editorial (Magazine) market. Below are my top picks from the Editorial submissions in MATS B. For their Mini (warm up assignment), the students in the Make Art That Sells (MATS) Part B class were first asked to letter the name of their city or town in which they reside. I give them a bunch of fun lettering images to get the wheels turning.

Then, their big assignment was to draw a map of their city. That’s cool because we have students from all over the world and it’s so fun to see where our students are from and learn about all these different cities.

Here were some tips and suggestions I gave them:

Things to think about:
–Add a few icons to pop around. Here are some ideas for you:

  • Your favorite shops
  • The monuments
  • The people walking down the streets
  • Funny or interesting odd bits like local flora and fauna, goofy signs, etc.

–How can we get the feel for where you live? What is your point of view? Do you want us to fall in love with your city? Do you wish you didn’t live there, and want to show us why? Do you have a fondness for the geography, or the shops, or the people, or the food? Show us all the wonderfulness of where you live!

Note: Typically, the text for the local name is shown quite large.

Let’s look at a few of the maps that I reviewed in class.

This is a great example of doing a map theme. Laura Irrgang shows her intelligence and wit in this map of Austin, Texas with her Field Guide to Hippies in their natural habitat. Note that the lettering of Austin, Texas reads right away. I love those purple-y grey blobs for the types of hippies. They pop, but not so much that they take away from her amazing characters. While this piece is full to the brim, it’s not cluttered. I can easily see an art director hiring her for a map.

Next up is Laure Allain’s piece for Brussels (below). Laure understands that some maps are more about a vibe of a place and less about a literal street-by-street map. Sometimes an art director will want you to illustrate a map that features a few highlights of the locale in a stylish way. Boom. Done, Laure!

I always say that a portfolio piece for one market is often great for another market. This piece by Ella Elron-Breitman is a perfect example (below). I can certainly see this illustrating an article on things to do in Jerusalem with your kids, but the variety of children in active poses will attract the interest of a children’s book art director. I love the limited palette. It’s cool.

Sometimes a client will want you to illustrate specific locations and the actual streets in a more literal way. Here, Heather Manning illustrates Tampa beautifully (below). It’s a clean style with lots to look at and enjoy. If you’ve taken my classes you know I am crazy about wanting you to show icons (little drawings of things) in your portfolio. What this piece shows an art director is like, wow, we can hire Heather to illustrate a whole book on boats! Or whatever. The girl can draw. Bravo!

Sometimes you’ll be asked to illustrate in a thematic way, like how Laura Levie has illustrated the sections of Birmingham. You get a real feel for each section at a glance. And again, A+ for loads of fun icons.
