THE 4 QUALITIES OF A LOGO

(1) SIMPLE: clean, flexible, and easily recognizable
(2) VERSATILE: able to work across different media and within different contexts
(3) DISTINCTIVE/MEMORABLE: quickly recognizable in the crowd
(4) TIMELESS: still hip in 10 – 20 years, depending on the market & size of your company

PROJECT – CREATE YOUR OWN LOGO

First, research the market. Look at other logos in our field and get curious. What catches your eye? Do you see trends? Does the logo fit the above criteria? How are illustrators using type, image, type plus image? Do the logos look professional or hand made? Next, research yourself. Take a look in the mirror. What makes you, well YOU? What’s your personality? What are your quirks? What’s your creative routine? What medium(s) do you work in? What sets you apart from the pack? What colors do you love? What images are you known for? Who are your clients now? Who would you like your clients to be?

Now, it’s time to create the logo. You will begin by sketching. When sketching, try 3 types of logo approaches. You may quickly find that one logo style approach suits your personality best, and follow that route.

Or, you may want to explore all three logo options: (1) FONT BASED – a straight-up typographic solution, i.e. your name. (2) ILLUSTRATION – an image that specifically denotes what you do, like a paintbrush. (3) ABSTRACT – an abstract/geometric form(s) and/or shape(s). You’re almost done! It’s time to choose your logo direction, and execute the final artwork. It is very important that the logo work in full color and one-color. You will use it in one-color/b&w for use on boards and banners, and other advertising and presentation pieces where the logo is a secondary or tertiary image.
