Overview

Lilla Rogers SFW

I’m Lilla Rogers. I’m an author and an agent for artists and artist-authors. I’ll be your teacher and guide as we uncover — and make a pitch for — the book you were meant to write and illustrate.

IMG 2174 SFW

Check out the incredible range of themes and styles of art-driven books! We’ll analyze a variety of books that will definitely inspire you. We’ll create a pitch for the book you’ll love to write and illustrate. Two of the books above were written and illustrated by artists I represent, Erica Root and Zoe Ingram.

A published book brings new opportunities to you like speaking engagements, teaching opportunities, more illustration gigs, writing for columns, being interviewed on podcasts, and much more (all of which I’ve done).

Plus your next books will be easy to pitch and a joy to write.

What is in demand these days is your cool creative mind and the book you’re able to make from your own vision — you just need the right instruction.

What is an arty book?

It’s a book that’s primarily filled with imagery and varying amounts of text from some to very little. It might be filled with illustrations, photographs, lettering, diagrams, and other goodness. It’s the book that you find yourself picking it up and flicking through the pages just because it’s so freaking gorgeous.

Book themes

Look at the variety of topics that an art-driven book can be about: an exploration of flowers, how to pet a cat, the imagined contents of people’s bags, magical musings on growing your own power.

You might create a beautiful journal with lots of art and prompts and maybe a few tiny personal stories, a craft or art how-to book that’s mostly photos of your cool projects … an account of something you’ve experienced or learned in life that you want to write about together with a few images or inspiring prompts … a memoir of a time in your life with drawings or photos … or almost anything else you can think of!

Arty books are a brilliant market for creative people because (1) there’s a huge demand for them, (2) they allow you to be 100%, completely, utterly, irrevocably YOU and (3) you don’t need to wait for a project — you’re in charge of your career and can pitch your own projects. Whatever your lovely weird little soul hankers after the most: that’s what would make a fantastic book. And it will be utterly unique – just like you. And I’ll help you get there.

Whether you’re an artist, a photographer, a graphic designer, a writer, a crafter, a performer, a storyteller, a hobbyist, and just someone who’s passionate about something and wants to share it and monetize it, this course is for you.

Lisa Congdon Books

A selection of the gorgeous non-fiction illustrated books by Lisa Congdon, two of which she did with my agency

Writing your pitch might be easier than you think! Firstly, you don’t need to write the whole book for a pitch. A pitch can be as simple as, “Here’s how cool my book would be. I think you’ll love it. Do you want to acquire it?” In other words, you just need an idea and some sample words or chapters.

Worried about writing? Can you write sentences? Can you text? If you can write sentences – emails or whatever – then you’re a writer. The good news is that you don’t need to be a great writer: you only need to be passionate about your topic. Your editor will guide you along the way and help you to polish your writing, and your copy editor and proofreader will clean up your typos and grammar until your words shine. You can pitch a book of illustrated quotations – or some arty books, like journals, for example, have very little text. In some cases, the publisher will get you a co-writer. Plus you can just write little bundles of sentences for a chapter (art agent Lilla will explain more in class).

Katie Daisy Books 1

A brilliant career! Here are a few of the many arty books that Katie Daisy has done, which led to spin offs like stickers, calendars, workbooks, and more.

How about if you’re not confident about your drawing yet? You can take photographs – perhaps overhead flat lays or other photographs. Think of the images you post on social media. If you’re a graphic designer, you can make a design-y, type-driven book. If you’re thinking of writing a book about craft, you can either take your own photos or sometimes the publisher will provide a professional photographer.

Here’s why making your book will be really easy. Your pitch essentially just needs to show an editor that you have an idea you’re passionate about and that you know how to pitch it to them. We’ll first work on your book idea, and then we’ll craft all the bits and pieces for your pitch in class, step-by-step.

Over the decades I’ve mentored my represented artists and taught over 30,000 students online, so I understand how to motivate without overwhelming, how to make course content exciting yet thorough.

What kind of arty book is perfect for you? What unique book will you write? Using my insightful worksheets, you’ll brainstorm what you love, what you would love to draw, and your weird, beautiful take on the world to come up with the arty book that only you can write.

3 Social emotional

These arty books explore a range of social/emotional topics.

Next, you’ll explore the kinds of imagery that would be exciting for you to draw or photograph, and I’ll show you tricks for using Amazon and Google to research and explore some of your potential topics, comparable books, and title ideas.

I’ll share some sample tables of contents so you can start working on your own  table of contents (TOC).

Selection of non fiction arty books

We’ll peek inside a variety of books to examine the layouts of double-page spreads from journals, how-tos, craft guides, graphic novels, and more.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a finished proposal and an idea of the next steps to take. Your proposal will include:

  • Why your book is so cool and who will want to read it (who your readers will be)
  • Comparables, where you mention a few books like yours but why yours is different and special in some way
  • A table of contents to give your editor an idea of what you’d like to write about and how you’ll organize it
  • A sample chapter or a few sample spreads, full of your gorgeous imagery

  • Assignments with a class gallery to submit your work. You can work at your own pace, or follow the class schedule if you prefer to work to deadlines to keep you accountable.
  • Inspiring interviews with amazing artists who have written and illustrated their own arty books such as Meera Lee Patel, Lisa Congdon, Erica Root, Flora Waycott and Courtney Cerruti.
  • Interviews with publishers to find out what they look for in a pitch!
  • Replays of my reviews from when the class ran LIVE so you can benefit from my teaching tips and apply them to your own work.
  • Plus I will be looking at every single piece of art submitted to the class gallery. Then, I’ll pick a selection to discuss in a bonus LIVE review..

FAQs

If you have a question about Make Art That Sells please check these Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) first. If you do not find an answer to your question here please feel free to contact us at [email protected].

Q. Is this a live course?

A: No,  this is now a self-paced instant access course which you can start right away. There will be one bonus LIVE review. Details will be added to the classroom.

Q. I’ve never taken an online class before. How does it work? Do I need to be at my computer at a certain time?

A: The e-course takes place in a gorgeously designed password-protected private classroom right here on this site. There is a separate classroom for each course, divided into lessons.

The beauty of an online course is that you can check in whenever you like and do not need to be online at a specific time as the content will be available 24/7, so it does not matter what time zone you are in. You can log on every day if you choose, or set aside some time once or twice a week to work through it. There will also be a private Facebook group where you can connect with others and share images of your work.

The written content in the class will be downloadable and you will have access to the classroom for six months after the end of class so you have plenty of time to go back through everything at your own pace. The Facebook group will remain open indefinitely.

Q. What format is the class taught in?

A: The class is taught using video, written posts and a workbook. Everything is made available in a bespoke, password-protected private classroom. There are weekly assignments as well as a handful of additional creative exercises in the course. Included in the classrom are the replays of the weekly reviews when the course previously ran live. Lilla discusses a number of the student assignments for the benefit of the class, to enable you to share the teaching points.

Q: Do I need to have a drawing tablet or be able to create digital illustrations for this course?

A: You don’t need any special software or equipment for this course. Our students use all kinds of different methods: some are strictly digital, others are traditional artists, and lots are in between. Any method you want to use to create your imagery is fine!

Q: Do I need to be a writer to participate in this class?

A: No. The good news is that you don’t need to be a great writer: you only need to be passionate about your topic. I’ll help you write it. I even have a technique like mad libs to help you fill out your book summary! Once you get a book deal, your editor will guide you along the way and help you to polish your writing, and your copy editor and proofreader will clean up your typos and grammar until your words shine.

Q: Do I need to write a large amount of words for this course?

A: No. You can make a book primarily of your illustrations or your photographs. You can pitch a book of illustrated quotations; or some arty books, like journals, have very little text. Your editor will polish your text. In some cases, if you have quite a bit of text, the publisher might get you a co-writer. Plus, you can just write little bundles of sentences for a chapter (art agent Lilla will explain more in class.)

Q: Do I need to be confident at drawing ?

A: Not at all! You can create a book that is entirely photography-driven, such as overhead flat lays step-by-step art technique or craft-making photos, travel shots, or other kinds of photographs. Sometimes the publisher will provide a professional photographer to shoot your work. Additionally, I’ll show you a few books by people that clearly aren’t artists but still include their simple, non-professional, yet charming drawings.

Q: Can I access Make Art That Sells courses from any device?

A: Yes, you can access Make Art That Sells courses from any device once registered, but we strongly recommend viewing our courses on a desktop or laptop for the best user experience. We pack lots of information and visuals into our courses and they are best viewed on larger screens.

Q. How hard is the course?

A: Lilla is a gifted teacher and has broken down the assignments into clear steps to help you create great work without getting overwhelmed.

Q. How much time will the class take?

A: The more time and energy you invest, the faster you will see results. The content varies from day to day but you will probably need around 20-30 minutes per day for the lessons, then an additional hour or two for the mini exercise and anything from 3-6 hours for the main weekly assignment, depending on how much effort you choose to put into it. It really is up to you. We encourage you to plan to spend at least six hours a week on the course (and hopefully more!), at whatever time suits you. There is a huge amount of information and inspiration packed into this course, and you should be prepared for an intensive learning experience! Follow thge suggested weekly schedule, or work at your own pace. All content is available until 31st January 2026.

Q. Does it matter what order I take the courses in?

Make Art That Sells courses can be taken in any order. You can take each course individually – or take them all to put a rocket under your creative career.

Q. How do I choose which course is right for me?

A: It really depends on what you are looking to learn.

  • If you want to create a gorgeous art-driven non-fiction book then My Arty Book Pitch is perfect for you.
  • If you want to create a stunning children’s book illustration pitch that includes everything an agent or art director will want to see, you want Illustrating Children’s Books.
  • If you want to create your own unique children’s book pitch, you need My Kid Book Pitch.
  • Please note, if you want the opportunity to put questions to Lilla and have the possibility of having your work reviewed, you want to sign up for one of our live courses. If you are happy just to have the chance to get your work featured in an online gallery and get support from your creative peers and have a smaller budget available, you want Assignment Bootcamp or Bootcamp Special: Character Play.

Q. How intense are the courses?

Live Make Art That Sells courses are intensive and the length of each course varies. Our self-paced courses offer a huge amount of learning and growth, but can be taken at a pace to suit you and your schedule.

Q. Do I need any special materials?

A: The course looks at art using a variety of media. We really encourage you to try new things, so it is up to you. Just get out your favorite art supplies! You will need a computer to view the course and a scanner or phone to take a photo of your art so you can upload it to the class gallery (optional).

Q. Do I need any special software?

A: As with the other MATS courses, it is possible to complete the entire  course using traditional techniques (painting, drawing, etc.) but if you wish to complete and submit the assignments digitally you will need at least a basic knowledge of Photoshop and/or Illustrator. You will need to be able to scan in or photograph your assignments if you want to upload them to the gallery or share in the Facebook group.

Please note this is not a Photoshop/Illustrator instruction class. If you want to get more familiar with these programmes before starting the class we would recommend Skillshare or The Art and Business of Surface Pattern Design.

Q. I am not a digital artist. Is this course for me?

A: All of the assignments given in the course are suitable for both traditional and digital artists to interpret in their own way.

Q. Will I be able to communicate with others in the class?

Yes, you will be able to communicate via the private Facebook group provided (where you can also share images of your work). This will be a great chance to connect with other artists and designers, get different perspectives and share your work.

Q. When is the class?

A: Class is self-paced so content can be accessed immediately.

Q. How much is it and how do I register?

A: My Arty Book Pitch is £259, which is approximately USD $338. Please note this approximate $ equivalent is given for reference only. When paying by Paypal, you will be charged in your local currency at the prevailing Paypal exchange rate.

Depending on your country of residence you may also be charged sales tax on checkout. This will automatically be calculated when you register.

Q. I don’t live in the USA. Is this course relevant for me?

A: Lilla Rogers represents artists internationally and has clients worldwide. Although the main buyers for art in the markets covered are in the US, much of the content is relevant for you wherever in the world you are, especially if you are interested in selling your work internationally. And because everything is made available to you online, it does not matter what time zone you are in.

Q. How is this course different to a college course?

A: As an art agent Lilla sees exactly what art sells and what doesn’t sell, and know what clients are looking for and how to present work to them. The course is based on many years of experience in the industry, and a clear understanding of where the gaps are.

As an online course, you can ‘attend’ from the comfort of your own home or studio, anywhere in the world, and the private classroom is open 24/7 so you can make it work around your life.
