Q: Lilla, how do you know what kinds of assignments to create for your ecourse, Assignment Bootcamp?

Lilla: As an art agent, I assign jobs to my artists every single day. I know what clients want to see. What they assign. What they are looking for. Which imagery, themes, and topics are hot, which color palettes are exciting, which products are selling like gangbusters, and which aren’t. So I build my assignments around those considerations.

Q: What initially made you interested in creating this course?

Lilla: My inbox was regularly filled with artists wishing to be represented. While I frequently liked the style of the work, I knew that much of their art would NOT attract jobs. It kinda broke my heart. Here were artists with great talent—some even with expensive art degrees—submitting work to me, and yet the work was not real-world based! It would not pull jobs.

So I created an assignment course based on professional briefs. Assignment Bootcamp—a five-month long course—was was born. It has run every year since, because it works! Students have gotten work directly from their class assignments.

Above: Projects commissioned for Lilla Rogers Studio represented artists. You’ll learn how to get these kinds of projects in our Make Art That Sells courses.

Q: What markets are your assignments geared toward?

Lilla: Great question. They are geared toward the top markets that commission lots of art. Each year it varies. It might be Home Décor, Bolt Fabric, Children’s Books, Wall Décor, Stationery, Gift, Editorial (Magazines), Children’s Products and Apparel, Journals—to name a few.

Q: Who should take this course? Is this for pros or for people just starting out?

Lilla: Both. The course is for anyone who wants to have a great time making their work better and market-ready in a supportive environment. All levels, all styles are welcome. I secretly design the assignments so that everyone benefits. We have top artists in the class as well as newbies. There’s a lot of energy in the course, and friendships develop that last for years.

Q: Can you give us a hint of what this year’s assignments will be?

Lilla: Part of the way I motivate artists is to build a level of suspense over the weeks. It’s the way I teach—to break everything down into bite-sized bits so students don’t get overwhelmed, and then to build up to the final piece. All I can tell you is I absolutely love writing the assignments, and coming up with fresh and unexpected themes! And then I get to marvel at the vast array of fantastic work that comes out of the class!

The videos will also be saved and shared in a private, password-protected classroom for all students to access after the live broadcasts.

  • Whether you should have two websites or should you put everything on one site
  • Why it’s ok to show your hobbies, crafts and other interests, and where to put them
  • What things art directors and agents dislike on a website
  • What to include on your ‘About’ page—some surprising things you may not have thought of!

…And Lilla may even do a fun and insightful Career Tarot for the selected artist!

What if I can’t watch live?

No problem! Students can watch a recording afterward in our private Facebook class page and in a bespoke, private password-protected classroom on www.makeartthatsells.com. Note that the times of the live broadcasts will vary each week to account for different time zones.

How do I get my portfolio reviewed by Lilla?

Lilla will hold a brief guessing game at the start of each weekly video review. You can join in if you would like to possibly be chosen for the review. The winner of the guessing game will have their art reviewed live in the course. One portfolio will be featured in each weekly Portfolio Review, but all participants will have access to view them and benefit from Lilla’s insight.

What will be reviewed?

Lilla will review 4 randomly chosen students’ websites and Instagram feeds. Only have one or the other? That’s ok. She’ll review either one.

What if I’m not ready to have my art reviewed?

No problem! You can still take this course & just simply don’t enter the guessing game at the start of each Facebook Live. Then, just watch and learn all you can. However, Lilla’s reviewing style is very supportive and will leave the reviewed artist feeling empowered and motivated, so don’t be afraid to enter.

MATS Creating Collections for Home Décor

Self-paced, start anytime

Build a comprehensive, professional and winning home décor pitch presentation, with the guidance of top art agent Lilla Rogers and leading art director Margo Tantau.

“This course is teaching something desperately needed in the industry. It’s a gamechanger.”– Margo Tantau, top art director, responsible for the production of around 5000 new products each year

“You’ll learn how to create a commercially viable ready-to-sell collection featuring five of the most popular materials used in home décor. With the presentation skills we are teaching in this course, your work will be like manna from heaven for art directors.” – Lilla Rogers, international art agent

Here’s a free downloadable quiz that Lilla made for you to get you thinking in a playful way about what your very own home décor line would look like. You might be surprised to find out how you can connect with this vast and lucrative market.

Class Assignment by Katie Vernon

This course provides the skills and knowledge to fill a huge gap in the lucrative home decor market – for artists who can conceptualize and pitch full product collections. By showing art directors that you can do this, you put yourself ahead of the game and stand out from other artists as a commercial professional. Not only are they more likely to buy your work, they are likely to buy MORE of your work – perhaps even your entire collection.

Class Assignment by Mara Penny

Class assignment by Marenthe

Why have we created this course?

  • Most artists sell their work as flat art, as a simple pattern or illustration. Art directors then have to imagine that on a host of products and bring that to life by working with a team of in-house art workers. However, changing economic realities mean that many manufacturing companies are seeing shrinking artwork teams, despite ever more pressure on art directors to deliver commercially successful products.
  • There is a huge gap in the market for artists who can conceptualize products and present those ideas in a professional manner. This is the answer to many an art director’s prayers, as it saves them time and provides new ideas in a marketplace hungry for new art and products.

Home décor productsImage: Selection of products from Lilla Rogers Studio artists created for Margo Tantau

  • Presenting a professional pitch requires understanding of the materials used to manufacture the products, both in terms of opportunities and constraints. This course will show you how to bring your art to life on a wide variety of products made from the five most popular substraits used in the home décor market. This will make you stand out head and shoulders above other artists.
  • MATS A & B teaches artists how to make more commercially viable art for the top ten markets. This course takes it one step further and teaches them how to sell MORE art to each client, by presenting their ideas as full collections, targeted at the lucrative home décor market. There is no other course like this available online today, yet it can be a huge competitive advantage for artists.

Artists need to become more commercially savvy, understanding the changing buying landscape, and positioning themselves at the forefront of that to make the most of the opportunities available.

Why have we created this course?

Because sales of children’s books are booming. Revenue from children’s books sales ballooned to $1.7 billion in 2015, according to the Association of American Publishers. Even in this digital age, consumers want the high-touch experience of an actual book. Art directors are on the lookout for artists!

We know that artists love illustrating children’s books. It’s magical to sink into a project for months, creating their own signature characters and world.

Zoë and Lilla have each had great success in this area and were excited to develop a course together. Both of them regularly work with artists and so they understand how to get the best out of creative people. Together they will give you everything you need to you get work in this lucrative and creatively rich area, branding yourself in your own style.

Lilla says, “We wanted to teach a children’s book course because picture books texts are so rich emotionally and visually, plus they offer opportunities for a multitude of artists’ styles, from witty to painterly to graphic.”

As agent and art director, they know what art directors want! Lilla has assigned tons of children’s book commissions with top international publishers to her artists she represents, and Zoe has worked with some of the top illustrators in the business today. So they know exactly what art directors look for. They have created a course that will you everything that art directors seek from a children’s book illustrator, including:

  • Drawing compelling (and consistent!) characters in your style
  • Showing characters in action
  • Using accessories, colors, and props to help tell the story
  • Designing a world that enhances the reader’s experience
  • Illustrate characters’ emotions in fresh ways
  • Understanding the role of pacing to engage the reader to turn the page
  • Using hand-lettering as a key part of the visual appeal of the book
  • Using color to enrich the emotional experience
