Creating Collections for Home Décor 2022

£399 / $545 (approximate)

Build a professional home décor pitch featuring your artwork!

HUGE NEWS! After running successfully as a self-paced course for several years, we are running this course LIVE for the first time since 2016!

The home décor market is huge right now: according to a recent report from Allied Market Research, the global home décor market was worth an already sizeable $616.6 billion in 2019, and is estimated to reach a whopping $838.6 billion by 2027. Let brilliant creative director, Margo Tantau, show you how you can get a share of it!

This course provides the skills and knowledge to fill a huge gap in the lucrative home décor market – for artists who can conceptualize and pitch full product collections. By showing art directors that you can do this, you put yourself ahead of the game, and stand out from other artists as a commercial professional. Not only are they more likely to buy your work, they are likely to buy MORE of your work – perhaps even your entire collection. So let’s get started!

Imagine dropping round to a friend’s house for coffee and finding that she’s got mugs that you designed … Or imagine seeing your stunning art on beautiful cushions and throws in a shop and hearing customers exclaim over how lovely they are … Or imagine your fabulous ceramic tea set being picked up and featured in a glossy style magazine. How would that feel?

Creating Collections for Home Decor Pitch by Katie Vernon. Cactus decorated tea towels, stool and terrarium

Class assignment by Katie Vernon.

Why have we created this course?

  • Most artists sell their work as flat art, as a simple pattern or illustration. Art directors then have to imagine it on a host of products and bring it to life by working with a team of in-house art workers. However, changing economic realities mean that many manufacturing companies are seeing shrinking artwork teams, despite ever more pressure on art directors to deliver commercially successful products. This is where you come in!
  • There is a huge gap in the market for artists who can conceptualize products and present those ideas in a professional manner. This is the answer to many an art director’s prayers, as it saves them time and provides new ideas in a marketplace hungry for new art and products.  So get ahead of the game with this exciting course!

Selection of home decor items, cushions, cups, saucers and metalwork
With Creating Collections for Home Décor you can get gigs like these!

  • Presenting a professional stellar pitch requires an understanding of the materials used to manufacture the products, both in terms of opportunities and constraints. This course will show you how to bring your art to life on a wide variety of products made from the five most popular substrates used in the home décor market (fabric, metal, ceramic, wood & glass). This will make you stand out head and shoulders above other artists.
  • Learn how to sell MORE art to each client, by presenting your ideas as full collections, giving you a huge competitive advantage. There is no other course like this available online today!

Artists need to become more commercially savvy, understanding the changing buying landscape, and positioning themselves at the forefront of that to make the most of the opportunities available. This course will show you how!

A winning equation

MATS: Creating Collections for Home Décor + Your art = A totally awesome home décor presentation!

Class assignment by Kendra Binney.

How is it delivered?

  • In a private online classroom, the course is over 5 weeks and includes live reviews where Margo will discuss a selection of student art and pick out some great teaching tips to benefit all. Not able to attend the live reviews? Don’t worry, the recordings will be added to the classroom for you to watch later.  Access to all content will remain available in the classroom for six months after the course finishes..
  • With online galleries where you can directly upload your work and view the work of others.
  • With a private online community to connect and share with other artists from across the world. This community will remain available to you indefinitely, even after the class ends.

*Note: MATS courses can be taken in any order, and many people repeat them because they grow so much with each round of the course*

If you dream of seeing your own art on actual products, Creating Collections for Home Décor will teach you how to create a winning pitch document for home décor.

I’ve never taken an online class before. How does it work? Do I need to be at my computer at a certain time?

The course happens in a password-protected private classroom right here on this site. There is a separate classroom for each part. You’ll get access shortly before the course starts.

The beauty of an online course is that you can check in whenever you like and do not need to be online at a specific time as the content will be available 24/7, so it does not matter what time zone you are in. You can log on every day if you choose, or set aside some time once or twice a week to work through it. There will also be a private community space where you can connect with others and share images of your work.

The weekly live reviews will happen at a set time, but recordings will be available  in the classroom if you are unable to watch live or want to watch again.

The written content in the class will be downloadable and you will have access to the classroom until April 03 2023 so you have plenty of time to go back through everything at your own pace. The community space will remain open indefinitely.

What format is the class taught in?

The class is taught using live Zoom events, video, written posts and a huge amount of imagery. Everything is made available in a bespoke, password-protected private classroom. There are both professional-level creative assignments and a handful of additional creative exercises in the course.

Can I access Make Art That Sells courses from any device?

Yes, you can access Make Art That Sells courses from any device once registered, but we strongly recommend viewing our courses on a desktop or laptop for the best user experience. We pack lots of information and visuals into our courses and they are best viewed on larger screens.

What is the difference between Hot Markets for Your Art Part A and Part B and Creating Collections for Home Décor?

Hot Markets for Your Art Part A and Part B include a detailed insight into individual markets, what work sells in those markets, who buys, what they are looking for and more. Actual companies are listed to help you get started with submitting your work. The courses include guidance on how to make your work more commercially viable while staying true to yourself – guidance which comes from top art agent Lilla Rogers and exclusive interviews with a host of industry experts. They include lots of useful assignments to develop your practice. Hot Markets for Your Art Part A and Part B teach you about submitting your work to clients, time management, negotiating, finding trends, getting an agent, getting ready for Surtex, and more. This is an intensive learning experience.

Creating Collections for Home Décor focuses on two key things:

  • insight into the five most popular materials (substrates) used in the lucrative home décor market, and everything you need to know to get your art on them, so you speak the language of the manufacturer and art director; and
  • pitching your ideas for product concepts as full collections, so not only will you make art that sells, you will learn to sell MORE art to each client!

This course will give you insight into what art directors in the home décor market are looking for and how to think three-dimensionally in order to present your work to them in a way they can visualize it on a range of products. Because to them, that means more potential sales, which means a greater chance of them choosing YOU to supply the art!

All courses give you access to a private community of like-minded artists who will support and encourage you on your journey.

Does Creating Collections for Home Décor also include creative assignments?

Yes, absolutely. You will get weekly assignments, each designed for a particular substrate and will be encouraged to create art for that material having learnt from Margo all about the opportunities and constraints of working with it. Each week you will be given product templates specifically for that substrate to mock up your art. By the end of the course, you will have a full collection of products featuring five different materials/substrates, ready to pitch to clients.

Does the course cover manufacturing?

Yes, in huge detail. Margo has many years of experience working directly with manufacturers and provides in-depth insight into how best to work with them, what to expect, how to explain your ideas, what affects cost, where you can go to town with your ideas etc. There is nothing like this available on the market and you will get an unprecedented insight into manufacturing with the five most popular materials used in the home décor market (metal, glass, fabric, ceramics and wood/MDF).

Can I get feedback from Margo on my work?

Each week, Margo will pick a selection of the artwork submitted to the class gallery by the deadline and review it LIVE – and it could be your art that gets reviewed! However, there is not the time to review all the art submitted, so there are no guarantees of getting your art reviewed. Margo will choose the art which has the best learning points for everyone, so even if your art isn’t chosen, you’ll still learn a huge amount.

You’ll also get access to an archive of recorded reviews from previous classes, for even more insight and inspiration.

How hard is the course?

Lilla and Margo are both gifted teachers and have broken down the assignments into clear steps to help you create great art without getting overwhelmed. However, please know that this course is aimed at working artists, or those with several years’ experience of creating (in any medium). It is not a beginner’s art course.

How much time will the class take?

The more time and energy you invest the faster you will see results. The content varies from day to day but you will probably need around 20-30 minutes per day for the lessons, an hour or so for the weekly live review, then an additional hour or two for the mini exercise and anything from 3-6 hours for each main assignment, depending on how much effort you choose to put into it. It really is up to you. There is a huge amount of information and inspiration packed into this course and you should be prepared for an intensive learning experience!

Does it matter what order I take the courses in?

All of the Make Art That Sells courses are unique and designed to be taken in any order you choose. You can take each course individually or take them all to put a rocket under your creative career!

How do I choose which course is right for me?

It really depends on whether you are looking to learn.

  • If you want to know what art directors look for in ten of the hottest art markets and how to go about creating work they might buy… you want Hot Markets for Your Art Parts A and B.
  • If you want to know how to pitch ideas for entire product collections for the lucrative home décor market, to sell MORE of your work to each client, you want  Creating Collecting for Home Décor.
  • If you just want to have assignments to stretch you creatively and build your portfolio, you want Assignment Bootcamp: Portfolio or Bootcamp Special: Character Play.

Do I need any special materials?

Some of our students work digitally, some work with traditional media, and some combine the two. However you want to work is fine. If you want to submit your art to the class gallery then you’ll need a camera or scanner, and you may find it useful to have access to a printer. You do not need any special materials for creating product mockups (see ‘Do I need any special software?’ below for more details on this).

Do I need any special software?

The class provides a wealth of knowledge on how to prepare and present your work to potential clients. It is possible to complete the entire course using traditional techniques (painting, drawing etc) but if you wish to complete and submit the assignments digitally you will need at least a basic knowledge of Photoshop and/or Illustrator. You will need to be able to scan in your assignments if you want to showcase your work at its best.

To create product mockups, if you are working digitally you will need access to Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop. You will need at least basic proficiency in this in order to follow the product mockup demonstration video which will be shared in class. A host of product templates will be provided in class for your use.

If you would rather just work traditionally, you can print out the templates and physically add your art that way. You would then need to scan in your finished pieces in order to share them in class.

I am not a digital artist. Is this course for me?

Lilla represents artists who use digital, traditional, or a mix of both media. Make Art That Sells courses are definitely not just for digital artists! Of course, some markets may lend themselves to digital artists and graphic designers, and others more towards painterly/mixed media artists or illustrators. Lilla is very clear in her guidance throughout the course about where different media can shine, and how to push yourself out of your comfort zone if a particular market is not an obvious choice for you. All of the assignments given in the course are suitable for both traditional and digital artists to interpret in their own way.

Will I be able to communicate with others in the class?

Yes, you will be able to communicate via comments in the classroom and in the private class space provided (where you can also share images of your work). You will also gain access to a private online community for all students of this course where you can interact and ask as many questions as you like. This will be a great chance to connect with other artists and designers, get different perspectives and share your work.

Is this an art class or a business class?

It is both, but it is not a technique class. The course focuses on giving you the insider view on what you need to do when creating your art to make it more commercially viable while still being uniquely YOU. It includes a weekly assignment and additional mini creative exercises, so there is a strong creative element to it, but it also looks at each industry in depth and gives business insight there. The goal is to create a portfolio piece every week.

When is the class?

The class runs from August 29th to October 3rd, 2022, and you will have access to the classroom until April 03, 2023. The written class content can be downloaded from class for you to keep. The private online community will remain available to you indefinitely.

How much is it and how do I register?

The course cost is displayed under the course title. Click “Add to cart” to register. If a course is not yet on sale, click “Join waiting list” and we will be in touch to let you know when the next course is on sale.

I see the prices are given in GBP (British pounds). Can I pay in another currency?

Creating Collections for Home Décor is £399 which is approximately USD $595. Please note this approximate $ equivalent is given for reference only. When paying by Paypal, you will be charged in your local currency at the prevailing Paypal exchange rate. Depending on your country of residence you may also be charged sales tax on check out. This will automatically be calculated when you register.

What payment methods do you accept?

I don’t live in the USA. Is this course relevant for me?

Lilla Rogers represents artists internationally. Although the main buyers for art in the markets covered are in the US, much of the content is relevant for you wherever in the world you are, especially if you are interested in selling your work internationally. And because everything is made available to you online, it does not matter what time zone you are in.

How is this course different from Lilla’s book?

Lilla’s book ‘I Just Like To Make Things’ is a fantastic resource and is highly recommended as a companion to the e-course. Being spiral bound you can draw and journal in it. Full of annotated visuals, it provides insights into a variety of art and craft markets. However, this course goes into much more depth about exactly what art directors are looking for when buying art in the home décor market, and takes you step-by-step through building a client presentation that showcases your product concept ideas for a full collection. It also provides new and exclusive interviews with key market experts, and gives you the opportunity to get your art in front of Lilla as well as become part of a community. Perhaps most importantly you have the chance to put your questions to Lilla when the course is live.

How is this course different to a college course?

As an agent and art director respectively, Lilla and Margo see exactly what art sells and what doesn’t sell, and know what clients are looking for and how to present work to them. The course is based on many years of experience in the industry, and a clear understanding of where the gaps are.

As an online course you can attend from the comfort of your own home or studio, anywhere in the world, and the private classroom is open 24/7 so you can make it work around your life.

MARGO TANTAU

creative director at CREATIVE CO-OP

Margo blends a passion for art, design and the people who create it, with an understanding of specialty retailing, manufacturing, and the challenges of being an independent artist. Margo’s love of possibility has taken her on an adventuresome creative path. She was able to turn the success of her unique retail store, Tantau, into a sought-after wholesale business.
