How would that feel?

Why have we created this course?

  • Most artists sell their work as flat art, as a simple pattern or illustration. Art directors then have to imagine it on a host of products and bring it to life by working with a team of in-house art workers. However, changing economic realities mean that many manufacturing companies are seeing shrinking artwork teams, despite ever more pressure on art directors to deliver commercially successful products. This is where you come in!
  • There is a huge gap in the market for artists who can conceptualize products and present those ideas in a professional manner. This is the answer to many an art director’s prayers, as it saves them time and provides new ideas in a marketplace hungry for new art and products.  So get ahead of the game with this exciting course!

Selection of home decor items, cushions, cups, saucers and metalworkWith Creating Collections for Home Décor you can get gigs like these!

  • Presenting a professional stellar pitch requires an understanding of the materials used to manufacture the products, both in terms of opportunities and constraints. This course will show you how to bring your art to life on a wide variety of products made from the five most popular substrates used in the home décor market (fabric, metal, ceramic, wood & glass). This will make you stand out head and shoulders above other artists.
  • Learn how to sell MORE art to each client, by presenting your ideas as full collections, giving you a huge competitive advantage. There is no other course like this available online today!

Artists need to become more commercially savvy, understanding the changing buying landscape, and positioning themselves at the forefront of that to make the most of the opportunities available. This course will show you how!

A winning equation

Creating Collections for Home Décor + Your art = A totally awesome home décor presentation!

If you have a question about Make Art That Sells please check these Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) first. If you do not find an answer to your question here please feel free to contact us at [email protected].

Is Creating Collections for Home Décor a LIVE course?

No, this class previously ran as a live course and is now an instant access self-paced course. It does contain an archive of replays from when the course ran live so you can benefit from the teaching points  raised.

I’ve never taken an online class before. How does it work? Do I need to be at my computer at a certain time?

The course happens in a password-protected private classroom right here on this site. There is a separate classroom for each part. You’ll get immediate access as soon as you sign up.

The beauty of an online course is that you can check in whenever you like and do not need to be online at a specific time as the content will be available 24/7, so it does not matter what time zone you are in. You can log on every day if you choose, or set aside some time once or twice a week to work through it. There will also be a private community space where you can connect with others and share images of your work.

The written content in the class will be downloadable and you will have access to the classroom until 31 January, 2025 so you have plenty of time to go through everything at your own pace. The community space will remain open indefinitely.

What format is the class taught in?

The class is taught using video, written posts and a huge amount of imagery. Everything is made available in a bespoke, password-protected private classroom. There are both professional-level creative assignments and a handful of additional creative exercises in the course. We also include an archive of replays of previous live reviews.

Can I access Make Art That Sells courses from any device?

Yes, you can access Make Art That Sells courses from any device once registered, but we strongly recommend viewing our courses on a desktop or laptop for the best user experience. We pack lots of information and visuals into our courses and they are best viewed on larger screens.

Creating Collections for Home Décor focuses on two key things:

  • insight into the five most popular materials (substrates) used in the lucrative home décor market, and everything you need to know to get your art on them, so you speak the language of the manufacturer and art director; and
  • pitching your ideas for product concepts as full collections, so not only will you make art that sells, you will learn to sell MORE art to each client!

This course will give you insight into what art directors in the home décor market are looking for and how to think three-dimensionally in order to present your work to them in a way they can visualize it on a range of products. Because to them, that means more potential sales, which means a greater chance of them choosing YOU to supply the art!

All courses give you access to a private community of like-minded artists who will support and encourage you on your journey.

Does Creating Collections for Home Décor also include creative assignments?

Yes, absolutely. You will get assignments, each designed for a particular substrate and will be encouraged to create art for that material having learnt from Margo all about the opportunities and constraints of working with it. You will be given product templates specifically for that substrate to mock up your art. By the end of the course, you will have a full collection of products featuring five different materials/substrates, ready to pitch to clients.

Does the course cover manufacturing?

Yes, in huge detail. Margo has many years of experience working directly with manufacturers and provides in-depth insight into how best to work with them, what to expect, how to explain your ideas, what affects cost, where you can go to town with your ideas etc. There is nothing like this available on the market and you will get an unprecedented insight into manufacturing with the five most popular materials used in the home décor market (metal, glass, fabric, ceramics and wood/MDF).

Can I get feedback from Lilla & Margo on my work?

No – this is a self-paced course. For live zooms, Q&As and interaction with the teachers please join one of our live courses.

How hard is the course?

Lilla and Margo are both gifted teachers and have broken down the assignments into clear steps to help you create great art without getting overwhelmed. However, please know that this course is aimed at working artists, or those with several years’ experience of creating (in any medium). It is not a beginner’s art course.

How much time will the class take?

The more time and energy you invest the faster you will see results. The content varies from day to day but you will probably need around 20-30 minutes per day for the lessons, an hour or so for the weekly live review, then an additional hour or two for the mini exercise and anything from 3-6 hours for each main assignment, depending on how much effort you choose to put into it. It really is up to you. There is a huge amount of information and inspiration packed into this course and you should be prepared for an intensive learning experience!

Does it matter what order I take the courses in?

All of the Make Art That Sells courses are unique and designed to be taken in any order you choose. You can take each course individually or take them all to put a rocket under your creative career!

How do I choose which course is right for me?

It really depends on whether you are looking to learn.

  • If you want to know what art directors look for in ten of the hottest art markets and how to go about creating work they might buy… you want Hot Markets for Your Art Parts A and B.
  • If you want to know how to pitch ideas for entire product collections for the lucrative home décor market, to sell MORE of your work to each client, you want  Creating Collecting for Home Décor.
  • If you just want to have assignments to stretch you creatively and build your portfolio, you want Assignment Bootcamp or Bootcamp Special: Character Play.

Do I need any special materials?

Some of our students work digitally, some work with traditional media, and some combine the two. However you want to work is fine. If you want to submit your art to the class gallery then you’ll need a camera or scanner, and you may find it useful to have access to a printer. You do not need any special materials for creating product mockups (see ‘Do I need any special software?’ below for more details on this).

Do I need any special software?

The class provides a wealth of knowledge on how to prepare and present your work to potential clients. It is possible to complete the entire course using traditional techniques (painting, drawing etc) but if you wish to complete and submit the assignments digitally you will need at least a basic knowledge of Photoshop and/or Illustrator. You will need to be able to scan in your assignments if you want to showcase your work at its best.

To create product mockups, if you are working digitally you will need access to Adobe Illustrator/Procreate/Photoshop. You will need at least basic proficiency in this in order to follow the product mockup demonstration video which will be shared in class. A host of product templates will be provided in class for your use.

If you would rather just work traditionally, you can print out the templates and physically add your art that way. You would then need to scan in your finished pieces in order to share them in class.

I am not a digital artist. Is this course for me?

Lilla represents artists who use digital, traditional, or a mix of both media. Make Art That Sells courses are definitely not just for digital artists! Of course, some markets may lend themselves to digital artists and graphic designers, and others more towards painterly/mixed media artists or illustrators. Lilla is very clear in her guidance throughout the course about where different media can shine, and how to push yourself out of your comfort zone if a particular market is not an obvious choice for you. All of the assignments given in the course are suitable for both traditional and digital artists to interpret in their own way.

Will I be able to communicate with others in the class?

Yes, you will be able to communicate via comments in the classroom and in the private class space provided (where you can also share images of your work). You will also gain access to a private online community for all students of this course where you can interact and ask as many questions as you like. This will be a great chance to connect with other artists and designers, get different perspectives and share your work.

Is this an art class or a business class?

It is both, but it is not a technique class. The course focuses on giving you the insider view on what you need to do when creating your art to make it more commercially viable while still being uniquely YOU. It includes assignments and additional mini creative exercises, so there is a strong creative element to it, but it also looks at each industry in depth and gives business insight there. The goal is to create five great portfolio pieces .

I see the prices are given in GBP (British pounds). Can I pay in another currency?

Yes, Paypal accepts most currencies. All class fees are charged in GBP (British pounds), and this will be the amount which shows up in your Paypal transaction, but you will automatically be charged in your local currency at the prevailing Paypal exchange rate valid at the point you sign up – so if you have a USD$ bank account the funds will be removed in USD$.

Creating Collections for Home Décor is £259 which is approximately USD $315. Please note this approximate $ equivalent is given for reference only. When paying by Paypal, you will be charged in your local currency at the prevailing Paypal exchange rate. Depending on your country of residence you may also be charged sales tax on check out. This will automatically be calculated when you register.

What payment methods do you accept?

If you do not have a Paypal account you can sign in as a Paypal guest and pay via credit or debit card. All class fees are in GBP (British pounds) but you will automatically be charged in your local currency at the prevailing Paypal exchange rate valid at the point you sign up.

I don’t live in the USA. Is this course relevant for me?

Lilla Rogers represents artists internationally. Although the main buyers for art in the markets covered are in the US, much of the content is relevant for you wherever in the world you are, especially if you are interested in selling your work internationally. And because everything is made available to you online, it does not matter what time zone you are in.

How is this course different?

This course goes into a great deal of depth about exactly what art directors are looking for when buying art in the home décor market, and takes you step-by-step through building a client presentation that showcases your product concept ideas for a full collection. It also provides new and exclusive interviews with key market experts, and gives you the opportunity to get your art in front of Lilla as well as become part of a community. Perhaps most importantly you have the chance to put your questions to Lilla when the course is live.

How is this course different to a college course?

As an agent and art director respectively, Lilla and Margo see exactly what art sells and what doesn’t sell, and know what clients are looking for and how to present work to them. The course is based on many years of experience in the industry, and a clear understanding of where the gaps are.

As an online course you can attend from the comfort of your own home or studio, anywhere in the world, and the private classroom is open 24/7 so you can make it work around your life.

Lilla Rogers  – Art agent, former illustrator and co-founder of Make Art That Sells

Lilla has sold art for products and ad campaigns worth over a quarter of a billion US dollars and has clients all over the globe. These include home and gift product clients:

  • Anthropologie
  • Blue Q
  • Chronicle Books
  • Crate & Barrel
  • Pottery Barn
  • Crocodile Creek
  • Target

As well as being a top art agent, Lilla is also a skilled educator and has taught everyone from little kids to professional artists. She prides herself on the effectiveness of her teaching and makes learning with her accessible, achievable and fun. As a creative person herself, she knows how to gear her teaching towards creative minds, and bring out the very best in them. You’ll be amazed by what you can do!

Margo Tantau co-teacher of Creating Collections  for Home Décor

Lilla says: I’ve known and enjoyed Margo for over a dozen years! Initially I enjoyed seeing her professionally, and organically we chatted about teaching a course together.

Margo felt that artists needed to learn how to make home décor pitches that wow’d. There was a real void in the market, she explained: art directors at home décor companies would love to get gorgeous pitches that spoke the language that they understood, and would then be more likely to license or commission art from them.

Together, we created CCHD and have been teaching it since 2015 with great success! I’ve taken on several artists from the course and my artists and many others have gotten licenses with home dec companies as a result!

Margo Tantau blends her passion for art, design and the people who create it, with an understanding of specialty retailing, manufacturing, and the challenges of being an independent artist. She has a passion for helping other artists and creatives grow their careers by focusing on what they do best. She’s had her own magical retail, wholesale and manufacturing businesses, and has also held creative leadership roles at companies like Creative Co-Op, Madison Park Group, Midwest-CBK, Studio-M and also at Hallmark, among others. In addition to teaching CCHD with me she consults and has a popular podcast called Windowsill Chats with 4.9 stars and over 100 podcasts so far!  She consults for several creative companies, and is always looking for artists and art that she can license for projects.
