Some of the wonderful children’s picture books we’ll discuss in our weekly Show + Tell live events in class.

Lilla here. Welcome to Day 3 of the #MATSprep for My Kid Book Pitch! I want you to get a taste of the what’s to come in class beginning THIS Monday, October 12th and to get you warmed up for My Kid Book Pitch, my newest course for Make Art That Sells. I honestly couldn’t be more excited about this course. I know that you’re going to make some amazing stories from this.

For the past two days, you played with the Button Man Card and the Fun with Magic Book Card to come up with your own unique children’s picture book idea: if you missed them, check out Part 1 and Part 2 here. You wrote down some thoughts and possibly added some sketches. I’ve been checking out some of your work on Instagram and I absolutely love it. I can’t wait to get started with you in class on Monday. Creative people have the most amazing imaginations, and together we’re going to unleash some brilliant stories. Are you ready to discover yours? There’s still time to sign up here.

Here’s part 3 of your children’s picture book idea generator!

Today, I’ll throw the Dragonfly Magic Card into the mix.

1. Take a good look. See that lime green head? How about the blue tail, and the four wings? Do you like dragonflies? Do you like any other bugs? Do you envy its ability to fly? Do you find bugs creepy? Fascinating? Did you know that having a dragonfly land on your head is good luck?

Dragonflies need to warm up in the sun in the morning before taking off and flying around. Do you wish you could start the day in the sun?

Let’s anthropomorphize this bug. Give it a name. Does it have a job? Does it own a store? What does it sell? Is it a child going to school?

Are its friends other dragonflies? Is it afraid that it won’t be accepted by other bugs? Do people only see it as a creepy bug and they judge it without getting to know it? Does the bug feel less than?

2. Now write freely, without editing or judging. If you’re an illustrator, add sketches or doodles if you like.

3. Include the scenes that pop into your head, and make note of any emotions that come up.

4. Mash up! Add the dragonfly to what you’ve written the past two days, combining it with the Puzzle Book and Button Man. Let them play together in your head. Write a little story. Just a few sentences is great! Artists, draw a picture, too.

This is just the beginning. The Magic Cards are simply a way to get your imagination flowing. Along with two Live with Lilla events every week with me, and loads of worksheets over four weeks, you’re going to amaze yourself with what you are capable of writing.

Don’t forget to share what you do today. If you’ve created an image, then share it on Instagram with the hashtag #MATSprep so I can see it. If you’ve written notes, share those too. You can make your notes pretty or mix them up with sketches and doodles, or just share them as is. Don’t forget the #MATSprep tag!

Lilla’s free live Zoom event. She talked us through some of her favorite books, answered your questions, and introduced a mystery guest, and we had a blast brainstorming story ideas for a polka dot horse and their hippo friend (or enemy).
