A free #MATSprep warm-up exercise for you

I often like to share a free warm up exercise, called a #MATSprep, before my courses, to help my students get ready for class. Today I want to share the first part of a three-part #MATSprep with you that will get you thinking about the year ahead and your amazing creative career.

Why? Because a successful creative career doesn’t just happen, for most people. You need to plan it: work out where you want to be, and how you’re going to get there. That can be difficult for creative people. Planning isn’t always our thing. Which leads me on to my next point …

A few of my many cups, vases, bowls and containers. From left: Floral bowl by Carolyn Gavin, fox cup by Helen Dardik, rabbit cup by Zoe Ingram.

Why three parts? This is key to how I teach: breaking things down into smaller steps so that they’re not overwhelming, and so you can focus on the assignment at hand rather than worrying about what comes next. It will make your art more joyous – and people buy your joy!

Here’s your free art assignment!

Here’s Part 1. You’ll get Part 2 on Friday and the final part on Sunday, and each part will build on the one before, so dive in right now so you’re ready for the next stage.

I’d love to see what you do, so be sure to share it on social media! Tag @makeartthatsells and use the tag #matsprep so I can see it.

Today, I’d like you to draw cups! Yup, cups. Draw a page of 10-20 cups, vases, bowls, containers of varying sizes. Leave room to write words on the front of each vessel. You’ll learn more in Part 2.

What is a cup anyway? It’s a container that holds things. It sometimes has a handle, sometimes has a saucer. It can be large, like a bowl. It can be a bucket, a jar, a container of any kind. Really, any cup-like shape is great! For short-hand, I’m calling them all ‘cups’. Look around your home and see what you can find.

Here’s a really simple page of cups I drew to show you how easy this is. Or feel free to make a more developed picture in your favorite media. It’s all good. Mine are all the same size, but vary the sizes of your cups when you do the assignment.

I drew this page of cups for you. When you do it, think about varying the sizes of your cups.

You’re a creative person, so create any kind of cups that make you happy. You can draw them, or paint them, or even cut out photos of cups if you prefer. You can simply take a white piece of paper and a pencil and draw a page of cups. Be you. Play.

Tip: You really get good at drawing something when you draw it over and over, so watch how you improve and relax as you draw lots of cups!

I can’t wait to obsess over #MATSprep on Instagram and see what you come up with!
