A handful of the artists represented by Lilla recently beta-tested the course during a virtual artists’ residency, checking out just one of the weeks on offer (the full course will be a glorious five weeks long, with a different theme every week – find out more here). We caught up with some of them to find out what they thought of the course and how they got on.

Q: What was your favorite part?

A: My favorite part was watching Riley unfurl his vast knowledge about the toy and game worlds! I’m sure we only got the tip of the iceberg, but it was so reassuring to know we have a seasoned industry veteran on our team rooting for us and our ideas. The videos of Lilla and Riley making games up on the fly was so fun and inspiring as well, it proved that if you can dream up an idea and put some substance to it, anything is possible.

Q: Was there a particular worksheet or exercise that was particularly helpful and/or fun?

A: The moodboards and the Djeco catalog were so helpful. They opened my mind up to the huge array and possibilities of toy and game design, from the surface design opportunities to complex game play games. It’s like fireworks were going off in my brain, one page after another!

Q: What did you learn? Did anything surprise you?

A: I learned that the possibilities in the toy and game industry are endless. It surprised me how inventive you can be, NEED to be actually, when it comes to a pitch idea. The course taught me to not play it safe and to get out of the comfort zone box, that is what will get traction! I also learned the importance of research to make sure my idea was original.

Q: How would you describe the course to a friend?

A: The Toy Pitch course is a waterfall of joy that will stretch your mind with the possibilities of toy and game design as well as teach you how to put a practical and professional pitch together. I don’t think they have invented a word for this caliber of course yet so for now I will describe it as AMAZING!

Q: What did you learn? Did anything surprise you?

Q: What did you learn? Did anything surprise you?

I loved that we had to work in a way that is not what I am used to. Instead of coming up with an art idea, executing it 2-dimensionally, and moving on to the next thing – this requires a much different thought process. Essentially I learned to work from the main goal/objective of the toy or game to then make logical backward steps (gameplay/rules/components) then to what makes it beautiful, unique, and swoon-worthy (the aesthetics).

I found myself questioning “why” I was actually doing something and if it truly lent something to the final product. I liked that a lot as being creative is a wonderful thing that I wouldn’t trade for the world but sometimes the logistical/methodical/technical questions don’t get asked and answered – this course allows both sides of your brain to work in unison to create a beautiful end result!

Q: What was your favorite part?

A: The Toy Pitch course taught me a whole new way of thinking – creating games and toys goes beyond just beautiful art and encourages you to think in three dimensions and in a much more functional sense. I loved that we are being taught how to create something that truly could bring another human being joy and wonderful memories to cherish forever. Lilla and Riley are so great at making new things feel less overwhelming by breaking down the steps down so they feel really approachable and fun to tackle.
