Are you ready to design a home decor line?

Art agent Lilla Rogers here. One of the things I love about sharing my years of industry experience is helping artists build their confidence. One way I do this is by answering questions  (and I get asked a lot!). Some subjects come up over and over. One of them is readiness. Today I want to answer a very specific version of that question I was asked recently :

“How do you know if you are ready to design a home décor line?”

Home décor is one of those dream markets for many artists. There are a host of fabulous clients out there, it can be very lucrative, and it can be incredibly rewarding to see your work on anything from tiny decorations to enormous pieces of furniture. The additional income generated by a vast collection of home décor products is a dream come true for many artists, and how awesome to use your very own rug, lamp, pillow, mug, plate, pouf or sofa in your own home?

So here is a short quiz to help you decide whether YOU are ready to start exploring this exciting, hot market in more depth. Go through the questions below and see how many you respond to with a resounding ‘YES’:

  • Do you love home décor websites, magazines, and shops?
  • Do you have a knack for or interest in decorating?
  • Do you have a knack for or interest in styling things in your home?
  • Do you drool over Pinterest boards focused on interiors?
  • Is strolling through One Kings Lane your idea of a good time?
  • When you go shopping for things and you don’t love what you see, does it make you want to make your own?
  • Do you love print and pattern?
  • Do you love playing with color palettes?
  • Would you love to brighten up people’s lives with your pretty objects?
  • Can you envision your art on real home décor products, in 3-D?
  • Are you open to learning how to digitally template your art onto product templates?

If you answered YES to most of these questions, you are probably ready to start designing a home décor collection – how cool is that?!

Hi from Pakistan. I already own a shop by the name Kayal. We create our own block print fabrics. I outsource home decor product which is basically uses decoupage techniqu. But like my fabric i would like to create my own home decor products. Now my question is in this course you use five materials to create products. Will the course go into manufacturing detail like mdf product such as a box surface decoration can be done in which ways or suppose birdcages made in metal could have a certain production style? Is this course for me who want to learn manufacturing also?

  5. Thanks! That’s my thinking and reading chair in Lilla Rogers Studio and that’s our mini conference table for team meetings. I redecorated recently in part for the filming of the new course. Got the gas fireplace, great music system, and a mantle to style. Gotta have a pretty place to work. The sewing machines, jewelry station and kiln is in the back of the Studio. There are 6 work stations, too, for when we are all in the Studio.

  6. Of course I answered YES to every question. I have been in the social expressions industry for over 30 years. Two years ago, at 62 (YIKES) I decided to reinvent myself and jump into surface pattern design. OMG I can’t tell you how much I LOVE it!! I love decorating and it would be a dream come true to become a home decor designer in the children’s markets…which is where my passion is. Maybe someday I could become your newest “oldest” designer. :) Thanks for all you do to encourage the creative mind. Tina Finn
