Lady Love

Lady Love got in touch recently to let us know about a huge list of successes she’s had since taking Bootcamp all the way back in 2015 – including designing artwork for her favorite band!

Lady Love told us: “I took Assignment Bootcamp seven years ago, and my career as a freelance illustrator became serious! What I have done? Well, I recently designed the poster and tee illustrations for my favorite band of all time, The Smashing Pumpkins! I had a poster from ‘98 next to my desk wishing someday to do the poster for them, and more than 20 years it became a dream come true!”

Lady Love shared some more of the amazing jobs she’s landed since then too: “I also made two campaigns for Crayola Mexico and Latam and a collection of dolls and merch for Ángela Aguilar (a well-known Mexican singer ). I also did some illustrations for UNICEF during covid, and gave one of my favorites, Gwen Stefani, a custom tee!”

Dawn Wheat

Dawn landed an awesome new job after sharing art she did in Bootcamp! She told us: “I had something interesting happen as a direct result of taking this course. After the first assignment, I posted my piece to LinkedIn (I don’t normally share art on there) and I was recruited by someone that I knew 17 years ago who is now a Creative Director because he saw my work. And now Monday, I am starting as FT Senior Packaging Designer for a large art materials company!”

Josie told us: “I was recently asked to be a featured illustrator in the SCBWI magazine. My first question was ‘Why? I’m not published, I don’t have an agent.’ Their response was that even though I wasn’t published it didn’t make me less of an illustrator. So lovely to have my work validated in this way. Published today so here it is.

Sam Chapman

Sam landed representation after sharing her portfolio.

“Lilla here. I made this bonus assignment for you to help you get ready for Assignment Bootcamp 2023.

IMG 2413

“I photographed a selection of a just a few of my vintage jewelry pieces for you. (Yeah, I like to collect things!) The column on the left showcases floral pieces with stems, the middle column consists of round brooch shapes, and the right-hand column is made up of jewelry pieces comprised of clusters. I grouped them because a) I like to sort things, and b) it showcases the variety of jewelry items. The more variety you have in your art, typically, the more interesting it is.

“To prepare for class, draw these items in any medium that you like. Carefully observing and drawing the of details of what you’re seeing makes your work more interesting, so think about drawing the distressed quality of the metals, the worn paint. Check out the shine on some of the gems. While you can’t really see the faceting of the big green gem, you can make up some faceting.

“Look at how the shadows under the various pieces vary based on how high the item is off the surface—the higher it is, the further away the shadow is from the item. This is a great way to show the dimension of a piece (that it’s not necessarily flat against the table). Feel free to invent your own pieces, or draw from your own collection.

“Don’t forget to share and tag @makeartthatsells and use the hashtag #MATSprep. I can’t wait to see what you do!

This exercise is going to get you prepped and in great shape for the Mini Assignment next Monday and the Big Assignment the following Monday. Can’t wait to share what the assignments are going to be! It’s a good one for your portfolio and for all levels.

Here’s today’s hint about what you can expect for Bootcamp this year: it will involve a relaxation ritual (and who doesn’t need that round this time of year?).

See you in class! Lilla Xo”
