5 creative career tips from top art agent Lilla Rogers: transcript
Hi, everybody, happy new year, happy new year! I hope you had great holidays. And let’s make this year an incredible year for your creative career.
There are ways you can succeed. Absolutely. No one is going to hand you a fabulous, successful creative career on a platter. It is work, but it’s fun work, engaging work, and it’s work that you may feel that you’re meant to do, as I do.
And let’s tempt you with some awesome projects that people can get. These are all by my artists. This is by Suzy Altman for Land of Nod, this is a doll, isn’t this incredible? This is by Gillian Phillips, and it is this incredible doll house. It’s like stuffed fabric and interactive, things open, and this is based on her artwork, and all royalty situations. This is a book by Sarah Walsh. So fabulous, it’s all full of her drawings that people can colour in, for Carnival, and this one is by Lisa Condon, and it’s designs and this was translated to another language, and it’s full of designs that you can do.

Gorgeous products agented by Lilla Rogers and illustrated by the artists she represents. There are so many items out there that NEED your beauiful art! Let Lilla show you how to get gigs like this – check out her courses here.
So there’s a ton of work out there, clients are constantly looking for great new work, the key is great and new. You want to constantly refresh your portfolio with new stuff. So you want to think about how you can clean out and shop your life.
Let’s say you get rid of everything in your life, what would you shop for in your creative life? Okay, you’d keep your gorgeous studio, you would keep your style, maybe you change your style, what – you know, think about that, and think about how you can improve your work, how you can commit to making better work, whether you’re selling on Etsy, whether you’re doing licencing projects, book projects, home decor, bolt fabric, there’s just a billion million markets for products that need your great art. Kid books.
So you want to work on things like your color, your imagery, your portfolio presentation, your art presentation, patterns, maybe you do patterns, maybe you don’t, and you’d like to do that. So think about what kinds of things you can do to to improve your style, and your work, commit to your art.
I have a friend who is an English teacher, she’s taught forever, and she goes around to student teachers and gives them feedback. And she says to them, if you’re not having fun, your students are not having fun, trust me. I love that. And those of you have taken my classes, know I always say people buy your joy. It’s true. If you’re having fun, if you’re really engaged, it shows, and people will then want your work on their products and books and children’s books and so forth.
So how do you go about it? Okay, let’s face it, New Year’s Day, new year’s can be a time where it’s a shame-based, you know, like, you have to come up with these things you’re going to do to change your life and it feels you know, you’re not going to do it, you feel guilty.
So how can you guarantee success ? Well, I hope you take my courses. I love my courses and I love having you. That’s a great way to commit, take other people’s courses, read some books, start a group, whatever it is, but do something outside of you that will help support your commitment to increasing your work.
And I want to tell you a couple of things that I am doing this year. Such as, I’m completely renovating my studio with amazing flocked wallpaper and a gas fireplace and a marble top Saarinen table, such beautiful things, and shifting the vibe of it, a little more nurturing, a little more homey.

We are also offering a new course, which we’re so excited about, a brand new course. A new website we’re launching, which is gorgeous and so user friendly. We are going to have a live event, and I can say no more under strict instructions, but it is going to be outstanding. And then for the agency, we are doing Printsource and SURTEX and the Global Talent Search, and so much, really great exciting things.
So, I hope you will join me in my ride and your ride, so thank you and have a great New Year. Bye.

Y espero divertirme!!!
Hello Lilla!
I just have to say how motivational I find all of your videos and blogs about how you work. I’m starting bootcamp tomorrow and I am so excited to see what i can produce under your guidance! My plans for the new year is to see how this goes and to try to move my work into a viable, stay-at-home career for surface design and licensing.
You’re book and classes have finally given me a direction for all this drawing I love to do. So Thank you! Also looking forward to learning about your new class. I have a small child who is not yet in school, so I like the pacing of bootcamp and I’m hoping your new class schedule might work for that, too. Either way, I’m hoping to take MATS A or B once my schedule opens up.
Thanks for doing what you do!
Hello Lilla,
Thank you for your video and encouragement! Your new studio sounds fabulous! I would love to see pictures. And I’m excited to hear about your new class and your event. Today I am cleaning out my studio space getting ready to start fresh for the new year!
Have a beautiful day!
Kathryn
Hi Lila,
I’m so excited about mats boot camp! I’ve been cleaning out my studio. Tonight it’s primed and ready to paint a fresh new color tomorrow. It’s out with the old and in with the new. My goal for 2015 is to find my style and build a solid portfolio, then I can see where in the market I would be a good fit.
See you on Monday,
Lilla, I’m so excited to get started on 2015! The last half of 2014 was gobbled up by our new Shallotte River Swamp Park, where site clearing has just begun (Yay!)
Now I can slow down on all the “behind the scenes” design work in putting an idea on paper and going into gear to make it happen: PRESENTATION BOOKLETS for Town Councils, a Disney style MAP of the future park with all the ICONS for the swamp and activities, PICTORIAL BANNERS using those ICONS for presentation booths, T SHIRTS with more ICONS for giveaways, handouts and DRINK COASTERS for local restaurants, full size BILLBOARDS for the local highways, RACK CARDS for the local rental companies to put in their Welcome Packets this summer, the all-important Swamp Park LOGO, directional traffic SIGNS, and now it is on to toys and coloring books for the future gift shop, which will be in the building I am helping to design with the Architectural Team, from the footings to the last little detail…like RESTROOM SIGNS.
See how much artwork is required to get a theme/adventure park from an idea into “opening day”?? See how many ICONS are necessary to get the idea across to all those government officials and then on to the public??
But now, I am going to sneak away and make some new art for ME!! See you in class!
I definitely will show my new Studio reno at some point! Looking forward to seeing you all in Bootcamp. xo
Yay! I’m so excited to find little gems of MATs this morning. I’m counting down the days until bootcamp starts!
I wanted to say, please don’t leave the “live event” a secret for too long. I’ve planned out most of my travels for the year already. I hope I can squeeze it in.
So excited! XX~Anisa
Bootcamp for the next 6 mos., following a goal list I set for 2015 with regards to creating, submitting and challenging myself – it’s going to be a great year and I can’t wait to hear all the details of your plans! (when you are “allowed” to divulge).
Hello Lilla and Happy New Year! I’m so excited to hear about the new class offering and live event :). Best wishes for happy creating and adventure-filled year! Jan
So excited for Bootcamp! Dying to hear about all the new things coming. BUT most of all excited about this time next year and looking at all the growth I’ve made :)
I’m wound up and ready to go with Bootcamp! Also, I’ll be delving into the world of Art Journaling for tapping into that inner truth. I’m working on the ultimate design for a journal that allows for the mix of imagery and prose. I’ll join or form an art journaling group. And, I’ll keep tabs on Lilla – can’t wait to hear about the new class and live event – also, as a homebody, I would love to see pictures of Lilla’s “homey” studio renovation (hint, hint ; ). HERE’S TO A MAGICAL 2015!
