Student success story: Kate Merritt
We love sharing our amazing alumni’s success stories – read more here – and today we’re thrilled to tell you about how the gorgeous art which Make Art That Sells student Kate Merritt created for class is now available on the British high street, at shops including Next, Home Sense and TK Maxx (known as TJ Maxx in the USA).
We caught up with Kate to ask her a few questions about her journey and how Make Art That Sells helped her along the way.

Q. Hi Kate! What are you working on currently?
Kate said: “I am currently working on some Christmas bedding and cushions which will be in TK Maxx and HomeSense stores this Christmas, so look out for them!”
Q. We definitely will! Which is your favorite market to design for and why?
Kate said: “I love to design for the home décor market. I especially love designing cushions, as they are made in the UK and the manufacturing process is fairly quick, which means I don’t have to wait a long time to see my new designs in store.”

Q. As someone who lacks patience, I can definitely understand that! How do you think Make Art That Sells classes have helped your artwork to evolve and grow?
Kate said: “Make Art That Sells classes have been a major factor in my professional growth. In my early career, I was a children’s book illustrator and so was first attracted to Illustrating Children’s Books.”
Kate continued: “Then I took Assignment Bootcamp, which I found so exciting and such an eye opener, delving into all the different markets, including home décor. The first Bootcamp I did was in 2017, and we did a project which was to design a pattern for a rucksack. The way Lilla broke the project down made it so much fun, and it turned out to be a whole journey of discovery into the world of surface pattern design.
Kate added: “Since then I have taken many of Lilla’s courses including four Bootcamps, Hot Markets for Your Art Part A, Assignment Bootcamp: Lettering, Lilla’s Art Recipes: Drawing Faces, the MATS MBA (Money BadAss), Creating Collections for Home Décor and Home Décor PLUS.”
Kate concluded: “I’ve learnt so much! Lilla is a very wise woman. From breaking projects down into small steps, to learning to play and have fun. As Lilla says, ‘People buy your joy’ and that has always stuck with me. I try to remember that every time I am creating a new piece.”

Q. We’re so thrilled for you! What would you say are some of the key things you have learnt from the Make Art That Sells experience?
Kate said: “I love to keep on learning, so I’ve always got a course on the go. Since my design for the Tropical Peacock collection was made into an actual cushion for HomeSense, TK Maxx UK, and Next, I have gone on to create many cushions and break into other product categories like bedding and even doorknobs!”
Q. Any aha moments during MATS you would like to share?
Kate said: “One aha moment was learning how to create my first home décor collection. Before then, I had drawn mainly one-off designs. The course gave me an invaluable insight into how collections are made, and what art directors and buyers are looking for.”

Q. You mentioned earlier that Lilla always says “People buy your Joy.” What brings you joy?
Kate said: “So much of my work brings me joy, for example getting out into nature and being inspired by my surroundings. I live near a lovely river just outside Paris and it’s really beautiful. If I need some inspiration, I just take a walk along the river and collect ideas for motifs from the different plants and animals. I also love the process of drawing and then bringing in all of the elements into Photoshop to create my patterns.”
Q. It sounds idyllic! How would you describe taking a Make Art That Sells class to a fellow artist looking to develop their art?
Kate said: “If I were to describe taking a Make Art That Sells class to a fellow artist, I would say first of all that it doesn’t matter what stage you are at as an artist. The courses are for all different levels. I found the classes to be very inclusive and supportive. Each course has a separate Facebook group where you can share your work and get positive feedback. The courses are broken down into fabulous mini projects, so you can get inspired and at the same time it allows you to take baby steps towards the big project. The way Lilla constructs the courses makes them totally manageable and really fun. I have recently finished Lilla’s Bootcamp lettering course, which has since given me the confidence to incorporate lettering into many of my projects.”

Q. Finally, what would be your dream gig for your artwork?
Kate said: “A dream gig for me would be having a whole home decor Collection, available in stores like Galeries Lafayette in Paris or Anthropologie USA! I am big into manifesting so just putting it out there!”
We’re sure it’s only a matter of time … Thanks, Kate! See more of Kate’s lovely art on her website and Instagram.
