What is editorial illustration? Broadly, it means anything having to do with text (words). For example, it could be something like a magazine article, a newspaper article, a blog, a news site like the Guardian or the New York Times, or a book cover or interior.

Before she was a top art agent, Lilla spent decades working as an illustrator in NYC for publications including the cover of the New York Times Magazine, Vogue magazine, the Grammies, the program for Philip Glass’s new opera at Brooklyn Academy of Music and heaps more. Now she’s passing on everything she learned, and everything she wishes someone had taught her, to you!

Today, as prep to get you warmed up for class, we’re giving you the very first mini assignment from the course that starts Monday as a free editorial illustration prompt! This first mini assignment is actually given out day one of class, but we’re giving it away for FREE today to give you a taste of the course and you can join in whether or not you sign up (and we hope you do – but hurry, in case this class sells out like it did the first time we ran it!).

One of the reasons why Lilla is such an incredible educator and her students are so successful is that she breaks everything down into bite sized bits, so you can maintain focus, and don’t get overwhelmed.

As with all Make Art That Sells courses, the class is carefully designed by Lilla to bring out the very best in all her students, no matter what level they’re at (you’ll find everyone from professional artists to beginners in class with you, making it an amazing place to learn). From this very first simple starting point, you’ll be led through the entire process step by step by Lilla, and will finish up at the end of the four week course with a strong, conceptual full color piece that will be fantastic for your editorial portfolio!

What will the final assignment be this time … ? Of course, we can’t say, but you can be sure it will be carefully selected by art agent Lilla, rich with visuals, very topical, and fantastic for your portfolio!
