Last week I shared a little sneak peek of some of the content you’ll get in my unique lettering course, Assignment Bootcamp: Lettering, which starts Monday, September 8th: I hope you enjoyed it! Today I’m going to give you another FREE assignment to play with and learn from. Read on!
In Assignment Bootcamp: Lettering, you’ll get one of these assignments – which I’m calling Micro Mini assignments – every day from Monday to Friday of the first week of each month. I gave you one last week and I’m giving you another one today to give you a real taste of what the course will be like. Just like in the course, you can do a little bit each day when you get the Micro Mini assignment, or you can save it all for the weekend.
Plus this one is going to be extra fun. I came up with the idea of creating five of the fifteen Micro Mini assignments you’ll get as though I’m a creative director who’s giving you a real-life brief. Not only were they a blast to create, and I think you’re going to love doing them, but they’ll give you tons of useful skills that you can call on when you get lettering jobs. I pride myself on making my courses engaging and interesting, and I can’t wait to see what you make of these assignments.

Here’s your second free Micro Mini assignment, and I’d like you to meet creative director, Milla Dogers (lol!), who has a commission for you! Okay, it’s really just me, but I thought this was the perfect way for you to see what a real-life commission is like. You’ll get FIVE Mini Micros like this, one every day from Monday to Friday of Week 1 in October. I absolutely adored writing them and I think they’re the perfect way to finish off the course and put all your new skills into practice.
Just like last week, I want you to riff off of and experiment with the lettering in your sketchbook or on your screen.

I hope that these fake jobs will give you an idea of the huge number of products that need your art. I’ve literally been on the look-out for lettering inspiration all year, and together we’ll be exploring everything from quirky mid-century fonts to beautiful antique scripts from vintage books and papers to fun and funky lettering like this.
When you’ve finished both your assignments, hang on to them – I suggest that you print them out and paste them into a sketchbook or journal along with your practice. Then by the end of the course, you’ll have a reference guide of 17 different fonts (15 from the class and these two warm-up sheets) – how cool is that!
