In this playful but powerful course, you’ll get something from your teachers – brilliant children’s book art director and picture book author Zoë Tucker and art agent and smash-hit game creator Riley Wilkinson – that will help you create some amazing art that’s specifically designed to get you paying jobs.

Every month for three months, you’ll get a mini text and an assignment from Zoë, along with some top tips and tricks to help you start illustrating characters. Then, the following week, Riley will help you take those characters you created in week one and make them into an amazing toy pitch. And art agent Lilla will add her insight along the way.

Character Bootcamp what is your assignment going to be

Here’s a hint: you first assignment will be about something that you ask for every year in Illustrating Children’s Books, but which we don’t usually have time to cover in that class. Don’t miss it! Sign up now.

Hint hint: July’s assignment will cover a niche market that Zoë gets asked about every year in Illustrating Children’s Books but which she and Lilla don’t have time to cover in that course. Any ideas what it could be?

While you’re thinking about that, we wanted to share a few student success stories from last year’s Bootcamp Special: Character Play to show you how creating characters can lead to whole new revenue streams for you. Enjoy!

Lele Saa

Lele Saa told us how Bootcamp Special: Character Play helped her when she landed her dream job of creating children’s illustration characters, which also appeared in an advertising campaign for Google.

Characters created by Lele for her dream job. She told us; “All the insights, thoughts, practices done in Bootcamp Special: Character Play helped me to carry on with the commission.”

Lele told us: “I would like to share my biggest illustration achievement so far, not to brag but to point out how wonderful Make Art That Sells courses are and how great they are in preparing you for the real working world.”

Lele continued: “I was commissioned by an advertising agency to create children’s illustration characters for their client (dream job!) and also showing my process in an advertising campaign. The job came in the perfect time, as I was already in a flow of coming up with ideas and the weekly assignments we were given by Lilla, Zoë and Riley. All the insights, thoughts, practices done in the course helped me to carry on with the commission, stopped me from getting stuck, and allowed me to produce lots of versions and batches of new characters super fast when I was getting feedback.”

Lele’s ad for Google features some of her character illustration work and her process. Watch it below.

The advert for Google will be shown across Spain both digitally and on TV, alongside print adverts, radio and more. Lele told us: “I still can’t believe it!”
