Sam Osborne

“This is the overview piece that shows most of the items in the collection. It really showcases the breadth of materials and textures we were introduced to as well a the variety of my final designs and how they work together. I love the glass pendants and the wooden birds!”

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?

It taught me to believe in my own style, to experiment within that, have fun and trust that each new brief and material brings exciting, creative opportunities.

What did you discover about yourself?

That the more I put myself and the things that make me different into my work the better the result and that sometimes I have to stop second guessing and trust that the artist in me can create something wonderful.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

A whirlwind tour through your favourite home decor materials, techniques and finishes with awesome teachers, an amazing community and countless opportunities to challenge yourself, grow your style and see how the professionals put together a collection of designs that really work together.

Jyotsna Warikoo Designs

My favorite was the wood week where the mini was “mark making and textures” and the key word was “Experimentation”. The main assignment was creating products using the textures created in the “ Mini”.
I got to learn so much about the wood finishing techniques and had a wonderful time experimenting with various paints, charcoal, textures. For my main assignment, I created Decal Wall art, furniture pieces ( decal/ hand painted and printed MDF), wooden serving trays(art paper application) and Laser cut hanging lamps. Wood is a totally new material for me and to envision and create art for this textural medium was absolutely fabulous !

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?

I am a surface/pattern designer and have designed textiles and home products for quite a while. MATS Home Décor course explores not only textiles but various other materials like metal, glass, ceramics and wood. Before taking up this course I rarely got the opportunity to design and explore in other mediums.

The home Décor course taught me so much about the various trends and finishing techniques in all these categories in a very short span of time. It was very satisfying as an artist to learn, envision and then create complete commercially viable product collections for these new possible markets. Also, the support and feedback of the fellow artists and designers during this course was exceptionally constructive and positive. I really want to thank and congratulate Lilla and Margo on creating this wonderful action packed course and also for their invaluable guidance and wisdom.

What did you discover about yourself?

This course opened my eyes to so many new possible opportunities and markets. I would like to think that I am more experimental, confident and happy with my art due to the wonderful 5 weeks spent with Lilla and Margo. As Lilla says “ People buy your Joy”…. I hope I can explore and continue to put ‘Joy” in my work.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

MATS Home Décor course is an intensive action packed 5 week course that explores 5 totally different materials used extensively in the Home Décor market. The course not only helps you grow as an artist but also helps in visualizing and creating comprehensive commercially viable product collections using your art.

I chose this image as it demonstrates an overview of my Home Decor story “Follow me into the Garden”

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?

The Home Decor course helped me grow in so many ways. Firstly, the standard of work blew my mind! It was daunting at first, but everyone was so supportive. It pushed me to find ways to create my best work. Work that I am really proud to have in my folio now. It was brilliant to get an insight into all the different substrates and techniques used in creating home decor. Invaluable information. I hadn’t realised how enormous and varied the market was!

What did you discover about yourself?

I discovered how much work I could get done in a week! I also pushed my style to be more textural which I had been wanting to do for a while. It was fabulous to take the trip “down the garden path” every week and really find my voice, my quirk and to develop my style.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

If I were to describe the course to a friend who was keen to explore homewares (which I did this week actually!) I would say that it is absolutely fabulous and well worth the money. You will learn loads, grow like crazy and meet a heap of hugely talented artistic folk. It is brilliant information overload in a good way. I loved it. Thanks Margo & Lilla!

Jules Gissler

“My imaginary flowers are one of my favorite things to paint—so making one into different Home Decor items was a joy. I incorporated things that I have loved since a child, over-sized french knots, grosgrain ribbon, metal hardware, and added soft, layered petals and painted the canvas for the lampshade, ottoman, and throw.”

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?

The Home Decor class helped me develop 3 dimensional items that could be used in the home with my 2-dimensional art.

What did you discover about yourself?

I was very uptight with my layout and as the course went on I realized it’s still designing the product and not necessarily laying it out in a straight, conventional order but also having fun with the layout or presentation piece. It is a design in itself.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

Organizing your thoughts and designs that you see in your head as products and actually putting them down on paper in presentation form and making it all more real.
