Tracey English

I picked the Glass design week as my favourite. It was the group of designs I was most happy with and also because I managed to sell them in the summer to a U.S Home wares company for development.

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?

The Course helped me to put groups of designs together under a common theme, it taught me about different possibilities that were available in the Home Decor Market, it also helped me work within the same colour palette over a number of weeks, something I wouldn’t of dreamt of doing before hand.

What did you discover about yourself?

I discovered that I liked the challenge of having a limited palette and theme over the duration of the course, it was a real learning curb to come up with fresh designs in new markets for the five weeks.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

A creative roller coaster ride!

Elizabeth Munro  | Liz Munro Art

My favorite assignment from the Home Decor course was the Ceramics week.

In researching for this project I was inspired by the wonderful scenes to be found on blue china. Unlike other weeks where I struggled with style and intent this week things seemed to click. I produced a wonderful prototype for an illustration series I am now completely in love with and am developing as a bigger idea.

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?

The Home Decor class opened my mind to a multitude of wonderful possibilities for creating and marketing my work.

What did you discover about yourself?

The class pushed me to develop my process marrying hand made and computer skills to develop more professional looking and pitch-able work with more efficient production methods. I also discovered that in doing course work I need to feel at ease with the stumbles and the results that I know are not my best as the amount I learned by pushing myself to meet the weekly deadlines was invaluable.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

The information Lilla and Margo provide has to be seen to be believed! Being in class with and seeing the work of so many talented artists is incredibly motivating and inspiring. Through pushing yourself to try new processes and approaches, learning amazing industry information and being in the company of such inspiring teachers and artists will come something magical that you will absolutely adore. The course is a gift to give to yourself.

Diane Neukirch | NeuIllustration

Week 5 in the Home Decor Class was all about using wood as your substrate/material to build a mini collection around. It was my favorite week because I really got to explore my love for texture, pattern and nature. My inspiration board, which inspired my imagery and theme for my collections throughout the course was “Field Flowers” and this assignment allowed me to use this theme in a manner that really seem to bring out what was intrinsic to my design and aesthetic.

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?

I grew in making collections for different kind of material groups, to use not only my illustrations but also patterns and flowers, birds etc.

What did you discover about yourself?

The most important thing I learned, that even the way I draw an animal or flower or something else, you can see my style. I always thought it was only visible in my girls.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

I loved doing the Mats classes, it helps you to create more diverse work and to find the markets you really like. And I adored the social part as well, it’s so nice to be part of a big group of illustrators.
