In our recent Assignment Bootcamp course, one of the assignments  was aimed at the lucrative and exciting editorial market. The assignment was to create an illustration to accompany an article on wabi sabi by Make Art That Sells co-founder Beth Kempton, following publication of her bestselling book Wabi Sabi: Japanese Wisdom for a Perfectly Imperfect Life.

Wabi sabi is a Japanese term connected to the idea of beauty in imperfection, so when Uppercase called for submissions around the theme of “perfectly imperfect”, it was clearly a perfect fit.

Here is the stunning art from Make Art That Sells students which was included in Uppercase 42.

How do you eat an elephant? Very small bites! As ever, Lilla was sure to break the process down into fun and easy steps, so it was always enjoyable and never overwhelming. This is a key part of Lilla’s warm, supportive teaching style, and is one of the elements which makes her online illustration courses so accessible and enjoyable.

So how does this approach work in Assignment Bootcamp? First up was the Mini Assignment. Lilla calls them Minis because ‘mini’ sounds safe and simple! They’re a time for students just to draw and play with no concern for the final piece (remember – at this stage students didn’t know what the final piece would be, or even which market it was for!). Mini Assignments are a great way to:

  • improve your drawing skills with practise practise practise
  • draw varied items to broaden your subject matter
  • loosen up because you’re just playing and having fun without worrying about the end result
  • get some good imagery to use for the Big Assignment – so when you come to do that, you’ve already done half the work!

Students also enjoyed lots of info about how to add texture to your art, including some delicious photos and a bonus download – can you see how they’ve applied it in these pieces?

As mentioned above, the Big Assignment for this month was to create an illustration to accompany an article on wabi sabi by Make Art That Sells co-founder and best-selling author Beth Kempton. Beth also joined Lilla for that month’s exclusive Facebook Live event, to share some of her thoughts, stories and wisdom with Bootcamp students.
