Lilla kicked the series off in style with an interview with the incredible Vanessa Brantley-Newton! Vanessa is a self-taught illustrator, doll maker and author and/or illustrator of 87 books! She’s also an expert on diversity, celebrates self-love and acceptance of all cultures, and hopes to inspire young readers. We’re also thrilled to say that Vanessa is a former (and current) Make Art That Sells student.
Diversity is at heart of Vanessa’s art: like Lilla, she believes that all children should see themselves reflected in picture books that they read. Together they discussed what artists can do for #blacklivesmatter and to make the world a better place; how Vanessa has kept her power; why Blackness is not a trend; how to approach adding diversity if you’re a white illustrator; and tons more.
In turns motivating, educational, inspiring, heartbreaking and hilarious, Vanessa’s conversation with Lilla was wonderful – but don’t take our word for it: watch for yourself here.
