Ready for the big reveal? Drum roll please … Lilla’s NEW course for 2025 is Color Quest, all about playing and experimenting with color while creating a whole library of gorgeous color palettes for you to use in your art.
Lilla says: “Many artists – including me! – tend to fall into the habit of using the same colors over and over again. I can’t wait to help you discover 12 incredible new palettes that you really love and can use in your art. It’s going to transform your portfolio and increase the number and variety of jobs you get.”
Lilla adds: “Check out the image above, for example. See how I took the same image and colored it two different ways, using two different palettes, similar to those you’ll get in class. I tend to use lots of colors, every color I love, but this restraint was so satisfying to try and pushed me in new directions!”
Q. Oh cool! What’s in the course?
A. Lilla has created a completely unique curriculum and way of learning about color that’s fun and engaging and has tons of applicability. By the end of the course, you’re going to have four brand new portfolio pieces, each in a different color palette that you’ve created on the course and really love, plus your own personal library of 12 palettes you can dip into and use going forward to transform and uplift your art.
You’ll get tons of downloads, including worksheets for making mutes. Lilla says: “Color mixing is an art form that you get better and better at with more subtleties, more nuance. I wanted to find a way to get you to make so many different shades and tones from just one color.”

Q. Daily downloads – what are those?
Yup – imagine getting to download a gorgeous mini assignment every day! You can either spend a few minutes every day doing your mini assignments or save them up for the weekend when you have more time – and of course you can spend longer on them if you want to.
You’ll get beautiful daily downloads which are carefully curated by Lilla to get more complex as the course progresses and your skills develop.
Then every Friday you’ll get your mystery image, which has been carefully picked by Lilla so they get progressively more complex and varied as the course progresses, and as your skills and confidence improve. Then you’ll use any of the three palettes you’ve made that week to draw and recolor the image, perfect for your portfolio.

Q. Color me intrigued (no pun intended!) – but why should I take this course?
Lilla says: “Color is queen! You can take every other course out there, but if your colors in your art aren’t gorgeous then it’s going to hold you back. The colors you use are part of your style and as important as your drawing skills. And if you are trying to develop a style then the colors you use – whether they’re soft or soothing or warm or so on – are a huge part of that.”
Plus the more range you have, the more jobs you’re likely to be considered for! For example:
- Illustrations in a soft, dreamy palette means an art director is more likely to consider you for a children’s book about getting a new baby sibling
- Deeper, darker moody colors could land you a gig illustrating a book about palmistry or astrology
- If you’re dreaming of a collection for Anthropologie, how about showing art with an elegant color palette?
… and so on!
Look at the very first image in this newsletter again, for example. Lilla says: “You can see how the different palettes would apply to different types of jobs. The top left, pink and sage one would be great for a lively book, whereas the lower right, with pale stone pink and subdued blues, would be great for a book on, say, meditation and teas. More color variety in your portfolio brings you more work.”
