Lilla collects gorgeous imagery to inspire and delight her students wherever she goes, including this lovely tea shop front in France.

July’s challenge was to use the lettering style of ‘Mariage Frères’ on a beautiful shopfront that Lilla spotted in France to create lettering reading “FREE LIFE”, with the option to add a border or other decoration around it. Being able to do lettering is great for your illustration career (like for book covers, for example), so it’s a fantastic thing to show in your portfolio.

Today we’re sharing the two winners (because Lilla couldn’t pick just one!), who each won a free place on Assignment Bootcamp: Lettering, plus Lilla’s other top picks, who each get an Honorable Mention.

Check out the winners!

Huge congrats to joint winners Jen Harrison and Lyn Paige, who each won a FREE place in Assignment Bootcamp: Lettering.

Winning art by Jen Harrison (left) and Lyn Paige (right).

Jen’s design featured a decorative border containing some gorgeous wild creatures. Jen wrote: “The wildlife border celebrates the species that inspire my photography and illustration, while the bridge represents Colorado’s wildlife crossings that help animals safely move through their natural habitat.”

Lyn describes her entry as “A little love letter to Jane Eyre”, incorporating a quotation from the book in the border.

… and the Honorable Mentions!

Lilla looks at every piece of art submitted for the challenge before the deadline and she also picked six other entries which each get an Honorable Mention.

Alecia Miller and Diana de Graaf both used birds and soft blues in their entries.

Laura Havlish and Clàudia Pegenaute both used pretty decorative florals in their designs.

As ever, it’s amazing to see how differently each artist approaches the same assignment, even when some of the elements are similar!

Shannon MacGrogan DEBRA FAUSTINI

More honorable mentions, from Shannon MacGrogan (left) and Debra Faustini (right).

We hope you enjoyed the show!
