Kari Percival

Make Art That Sells student Kari and her second author-illustrated book. Imagine seeing YOUR book in a bookshop like this!
Make Art That Sells student Kari Percival’s author-illustrated picture book Safe Crossing, published this year by Chronicle Books, has garnered a ton of nominations and awards. It was noted as one of the Best Books of 2025 by the New York Public Library, one of 12 Best Picture Books of 2025 by BookPage, and Best Informational Picture Books for Young Readers by The Chicago Public Library, and been honored as a Gold Standard Selection by the Junior Library Guild.

One of the spreads from Kari’s second author-illustrated book, Safe Crossing.
Kari told us: “It was Illustrating Children’s Books that really upped my game. It really helped me level up to being able to illustrate a picture book, from sketches to character design, to final art. That class was a kick in the pants: the learning curve was steep, and I had trouble keeping up. I learned what was expected of me by the industry. It was also totally what I needed to take myself seriously and be taken seriously as picture book illustrator. I’ve since won the Ezra Jack Keats Award for Writer, and my books have received a bunch of high-profile accolades, like the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, Texas Bluebonnet Award List, A Kirkus Star, and the New York Public Library’s Best Picture Books of 2025. Thanks, Lilla and Zoe!”
