Meet the 3 Make Art That Sells students now represented by Lilla Rogers!

It’s true, we might get a little bit repetitive at times, but, as we might have mentioned once or twice in the past, Make Art That Sells courses (especially the live courses) are an incredible opportunity to get your art directly in front of art agent Lilla – and maybe get offered representation.

Over the past eight years since Make Art That Sells was founded, Lilla has scooped up 21 students from class to represent, including three in 2020 – and it looks like she might beat that number in 2021, taking on three new artists in the first two months alone.

Why does Lilla love to represent Make Art That Sells students? Because not only does she get to see all the fantastic artwork that they create, but she also gets to see how students conduct themselves in class, how they interact with their fellow students, and whether they meet class deadlines.

Kay Wolfersperger

represented by lilla rogers

Kay has been a Make Art That Sells student since 2015, and has taken multiple classes, including My Kid Book Pitch, Creating Collections for Home Décor, Hot Markets for Your Art Part A and Part B, Illustrating Children’s Books twice, MATS MBA (Money BadAss), Assignment Bootcamp three times and Editorial three times, before signing up for My Year of Art School 2021.

Susan and Kim, agents at Lilla Rogers Studio, said: “We love Kay’s terrific lettering and bright palettes, which are well suited for everything from stationery to advertising. She has an amazing design sense and a strong editorial style that is ideal for clients like the Washington Post, and her art would also be lovely on journals, greeting cards, packaging and in web advertising.”

MATS: How have the classes helped you evolve/grow?

Kay says: “The courses helped me evolve and grow by providing structure and deadlines. Deadline can be a scary word but Lilla always made it fun so they became more like finish lines you celebrated once you met them! There is also a lot of easing into assignments with prep and warm up so by the time you begin your finished piece it’s a walk in the park. Every course I took I noted my improvement from beginning to end which was also very encouraging. Additionally, the community is very supportive and warm and full of loads of great advice.”

MATS: What’s your best tip or piece of advice for Make Art That Sells students?

Kay says: “My best tip or piece of advice is to put in the hours. If you want to find your style and improve the quality of your work, budget the time to devote to your practice.”

MATS: Which course was your favorite, and why?

Kay says: “My favorite course was Illustrating Children’s Books. I loved the daily prompts. The frequency and speed at which you have to complete them makes you feel less precious about your work and encourages you to draw subjects you may not typically gravitate towards. A real boundary pusher! Additionally, the course provided so much information about the children’s book industry and Lilla and Zoë make it so fun and something to look forward to.”

MATS: How did you feel when Lilla got in touch to discuss representation?

Kay says: “I felt delighted! I had been participating in Global Talent Search and Make Art That Sells Course since 2015, putting in the hours in between my graphic design client jobs, nights, weekends, vacations – so it felt like a huge accomplishment when I heard from her. I’m still thrilled with excitement about this new chapter!”

Erin Vanessa Sand

ErinVanessa Headshot Make Art That Sells Meet the 3 Make Art That Sells students now represented by Lilla Rogers!

Another repeat Make Art That Sells student, Erin has taken My Kid Book Pitch, Illustrating Children’s Books. Creating Collections for Home Décor, Hot Markets for Your Art Part A and Part B and more, before signing up for My Semester of Art School in 2020 and My Year of Art School in 2021.

Susan and Kay from Lilla Rogers Studio said: “Erin’s rich watercolors are so full of detail and beautiful patterns, and her food images make us hungry every time we see them. She has a strong editorial edge to some of her work, ideal for our wide range of editorial clients. Her environments, whether still lifes or narrative settings, pull the viewer in and make you want to explore more, which is brilliant for children’s book illustration, puzzles and wall decor.”

MATS: What was the best/most valuable thing you learned from MATS?

Erin says: “It’s been great to learn how Lilla looks at artwork and visualizes it for multiple products, across multiple markets. It helps to have more specific goals in mind when I create new pieces. Now it’s not just ‘I want to draw a pretty flower’. It’s ‘How do I draw a pretty flower so that it could get picked up for a greeting card? Should I add more elements to it so that it also has potential for bolt fabric, or home décor?’”

MATS: How did you feel when Lilla got in touch to discuss representation?

Erin says: “It was early in the morning and I was still in bed, and I noticed the email when I first picked up my phone. I started yelling, jumped out of bed, ran around the apartment, and did a happy dance that possibly (definitely) woke up the neighbors downstairs. And then I lay down in the middle of the living room floor, laughing. So I think I was pretty happy!”

MATS: What’s your dream job?

Erin says: “I think my dream job would be to create a kids’ collection of home décor and/or toys. Or write and illustrate my own kids’ book. Or get my own giftware collection. I can’t decide!!”

MATS: What’s your best tip or piece of advice for Make Art That Sells students?

Erin says: “Keep going!! Keep doing the courses, and take the deadlines seriously to set yourself up with good mental focus, and strong discipline. If it’s one of the self-paced courses, set your own deadlines. Then if you have time, go back to the courses after they are over and redo the assignments, but pick a different theme. It takes a long time, but if you show up every day, even if it’s only a few minutes here and there, you’ll improve. Seriously!”

Tisha Lee

tisha and studio Make Art That Sells Meet the 3 Make Art That Sells students now represented by Lilla Rogers!

You’ve guessed it: Tisha is yet another Make Art That Sells addict. She’s taken courses including My Kid Book Pitch, Illustrating Children’s Books, Hot Markets for Your Art Part A and Creating Collections for Home Décor, and in 2021 signed up for the My Magical Kid Book and Toy Career bundle.

Here’s what Susan and Kim from Lilla Rogers Studio had to say: “Tisha’s work in the Illustrating Children’s Books class really stood out: it was love at first sight with her little character. She has a lovely confident sophistication. Her work is ideal for a wide range of stationery products, but we can also see her doing amazing puzzles, wall decor, and even bolt fabric.”

MATS: What is your favorite piece of work from a Make Art That Sells course?

Tisha says: “My favorite piece would have to have to be from the Illustrating Children’s Book course, poses week. It’s so much fun to create the initial character and then bring it to life depending on the personality that’s written in the text and in your head. We are all so nuanced in how we move our bodies – whether it’s sitting down and reading a book or how we might express joy when receiving good news. There’s just so much information that can be communicated in a pose!”

MATS: What is the best/most valuable thing you’ve learned from MATS?

Tisha says: “By far, the most valuable thing has been to break everything down into bite size pieces and to just start from there. And that people buy your joy!”

MATS: How did you feel when Lilla got in touch to discuss representation?

Tisha says: “Beyond excited and quite literally jumping for joy! I’ve always had such admiration for Lilla Rogers Studio and all the amazingly talented artists her studio represents so I’m incredibly thrilled to be a part of that.”

MATS: What brings you joy?

Tisha says: “Making art definitely brings me joy but so does “filling the well” so to speak. So, looking at beautiful art in museums, traveling and seeing things that are “brand new” to me, making a meal I’ve never eaten before, watching movies with great colors and cinematography, listening to all kinds of energetic and creative music, playing the piano, going to the desert or beach with my dogs and watching them run around and get dirty. The list goes on!”

Susan and Kim from Lilla Rogers Studio added: “All three artists are perfect for children’s book illustration and children’s decor. They each bring a unique style to kids’ book work, with strong characters and expressions. We love all three, and can see them reaching even unanticipated audiences with their art.”
