Learn how to get paid for illustrating children’s books!

Our hugely popular online course, Illustrating Children’s Books, starts May 20th

FREE video on what to put in a toy pitch, plus Part 2 of your FREE toy pitch assignment!

Find out what to put in a toy pitch and the three things an art director definitely wants to see!

Lilla here. Can you believe that My Toy Pitch starts one week today? I’m so hyped for class to start: I know you’re going to love it and we’re going to make tons of amazing art tapping into those wonderful quirky minds of yours.

What time is it?! Here’s a message from Riley and me – and if you like this, DO NOT MISS our FREE live Zoom event on Saturday, July 3rd at 12 noon EST/5 pm BST!

Did you have fun researching for your Blobby Worksheet for Part 1 of your FREE #MATSprep warm up assignment? (If you missed it then click here to find out more and join in – and maybe win a free place in class!)

Are you amazed at all the gorgeous toy and game products out there? It’s endless, isn’t it? It’s such a hot market for your art right now. Products for children are always a strong market for artists in any economy, and it’s especially true right now during the pandemic because parents are so keen to get their kids off their devices for a little while, and because we all need that little dopamine hit that internet shopping provides. (Top tip from British Jennie: if your kid now thinks that “Don’t forget to subscribe!” is a legitimate way of saying goodbye, it’s probably time to step away from the screens for a while.)

Part 2 is going to be a little bit more time consuming than Part 1, but it’s going to be great preparation for class, a lot of fun, and it’s going to give you some great insights into the toy and game market. Plus don’t forget, if you share what you do using the hashtag #MATSprep and tag @makeartthatsells, you could win a free place in class during Saturday’s Zoom!

Riley has come up with a great theme for you to draw which is both hilarious and visually delightful, but also perfect for the toy and game market because it involves:

  • Animals as characters, which are always in demand
  • A scene or story which makes an environment, a play world for kids
  • A fresh idea

Drum roll please …
Your theme is: Cats on a tour bus in Barcelona!

Right now I just want you to start drawing pictures around the theme (if you’ve taken my classes you’ll already know I love icons, icons icons!). Here are a few ideas of things you might draw to get you started:

  • Cats or kittens in clothes, perhaps with cameras and backpacks
  • A tour bus
  • Signs in Spanish
  • A museum, shops
  • Walking shoes
  • Euros

Top tips:

  • Sketches are fine at this stage if you don’t want to go to finish. You can always perfect your work after the live Zoom, or after class.
  • It’s best to draw the items separately. If you want to make a little scene here and there that’s fine, but it’s not necessary. The purpose of having your items separate is so you can have flexibility when creating and inventing toy items for your pitch. We’ll explain more on during the live Zoom event on Saturday.
  • Children love a character to play with. The cats are the stars of your toy, so be sure we can see the faces clearly. Are they appealing? Can we see the eyes? If you’ve taken Illustrating Children’s Books then you’ll already know a ton about creating characters that you can use here.
