Find out below what two pro illustrators thought of art agent Lilla’s brand NEW Color Quest course, which starts Monday, February 3rd (we think the second one will surprise you!) – but first some BREAKING NEWS!
STOP PRESS! NEW BONUS ASSIGNMENTS!
Lilla has just created FOUR bonus Palette Finder assignments for Color Quest 2025. Each one is based around a pretend illustration assignment from a client, to give you a taste of how you can use what you learn in Color Quest in a real-life scenario.
Lilla’s innovative Palette Finder assignments will help you create brand new beautiful color palettes based on images curated by Lilla, including quirky vintage ephemera, charming old-fashioned tins and Parisian interiors.
Lilla says: “I’m so excited for these because they help you understand why you need different palettes—because when a client emails you with a commission, the color palette you come up with needs to match the vibe of the job.”
(Can’t wait? Look out for a sample of the bonus assignments coming up as part of your FREE #MATSprep warm-up exercise in just a few weeks!)
That means you’ll get TWO Palette Finders every Thursday – a standard one and a bonus pretend commission one – and you can either do both or pick one if you’re short on time. That gives you a total of 16 Palette Finders over the whole of the Color Quest course! Don’t miss it – sign up here.
In fall 2024, Lilla hosted her annual retreat for the artists she represents at her beautiful studio – and while they were there, she got them to beta test Color Quest, which starts in just under a month, on Monday, February 3rd.
Some of the artists represented by Lilla beta tested Color Quest at a retreat she hosted at her home and studio.
Lilla handed out some carefully curated colored images with dreamy palettes, and asked the artists to match the colors they found in the images using her art supplies.
Then they got to re-color a different image using the stunning color palettes they’d created.
Sounds good? Well guess what – that’s exactly what students in Lilla’s Color Quest course will be doing!
In Color Quest, you’ll get a daily download every day, Monday through Friday. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, these will be Lilla’s dreamy Palette Finder assignments, which each feature a gorgeous image. You’ll make a page of blobs or squares representing the colors you see in the image to create a beautiful palette. By the end of the course, you’ll have 12 of these palettes which you can use to make your art work even more stunning!
Plus don’t forget you’ll also now get an extra BONUS Palette Finder assignment every Thursday that mimics a real life commission!
Here’s illustrator Erica Root (left) and other artists represented by Lilla beta-testing Color Quest during a retreat at Lilla’s home and studio.
Lilla says: “I’m excited for you to enjoy your Color Quest daily downloads! I’ve spent months digging deep to gather the most gorgeous color palettes for you to replicate. They feature quirky vintage ephemera, stylish clothing, charming old-fashioned tins, interiors from hotels I stayed at in Paris, and more. We start out easy. You’re going to start your first Tuesday by simply matching the four colors of the image. It’s structured in a way that increases complexity and challenge.”
On Friday, the mystery image to recolor is revealed! You’ll get a download with a fresh image to draw and re-color with any of your palettes – by the end of the course, you’ll have four beautiful pieces of art for your portfolio.
In Lilla’s brand NEW Color Quest course, you’ll get a carefully curated image every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday that will help you come up with dreamy palettes you can use to refresh and amp up your artwork.
Lilla says: “I’ve selected images that are easy to draw but also full of personality so that you can have a lot of fun with them, and they will be great for your portfolio.”
Erica Root
Here’s the image Erica selected (left) and the color palette she came up with (right).
So what did pro illustrator and author Erica Root think of this assignment?
Erica told us: “I tend to get stuck in my comfort zone of color palettes. I still love them and don’t want to abandon them completely, however, this assignment really introduced me to some much needed variation to add to my existing palettes! The bright, rich, punchy colors aren’t usually my go-to choices, so this led me to discover colors that I’m actually really eager to use going forward now. Experimenting with new color palettes can be intimidating but this made me excited to give my portfolio a much needed boost of color!”
… and here’s the art that Erica created with her new palette. Lilla will give you an image to draw and re-color every Friday in the big reveal, so you don’t have to worry about what to draw – you can just enjoy the process.
Lilla Rogers
Here are some of the palettes Lilla created from her Palette Finder assignments. Viewers got to pick their favorite before Lilla colored the border live on camera. Which would you choose?
In a recent Make Art That Sells team meeting, Beth complimented Lilla on the quotation that she’d colored during a free Zoom event during our huge annual sale.
Lilla wrote out a hand-lettered quotation, “When you make art, you are making peace and hope”, ahead of the color demo Zoom she hosted during our recent annual sale. Then, during the Zoom, she shared a variety of palettes that she’d created while writing Color Quest, and asked viewers to pick which palette she should use to color the border of the quotation live on camera. (If you missed the amazing color demo Zoom, watch it below! You can grab your art supplies and paint along with Lilla or just watch, enjoy, and get inspired.)
Lilla colored the border of this hand-lettered quotation live on camera during a lively and inspiring color demo Zoom – if you missed it (or want to watch again), catch up below!
Beth said how much she liked the colors that Lilla had ended up using in the border of her artwork, and Lilla said that she felt that her own use of color had hugely improved since writing and testing the Color Quest course.
Just to recap – Lilla is a former full-time illustrator (and now has a brand-new range of temporary tattoos out too!) and worked as an art agent for 30 years. If Color Quest can up the color game of even a seasoned professional, imagine what it can do for you!
