How to make an art portfolio - Portfolio Club 2026 course by Lilla Rogers

See some of Lilla’s favorite art from Portfolio Club!

Lilla’s longest and most wide-ranging illustration course, Portfolio Club, has been running for six months now, so today we thought we’d share some of Lilla’s favorite pieces so far, to bring a little brightness and beauty to your inbox. Lilla says: “I am so proud of the top-notch art by my students for the Portfolio Club course and am delighted to share them with you today.” Portfolio Club is eight fabulous months long – which means students still have two months of amazing new content to look forward to – and it covers a huge variety of art-markets with quirky and inspiring assignments written by Lilla as though she were an art or creative director reaching out with a real-life job. It’s been wonderful to watch our brilliant students fill their illustration portfolios with such incredible art! In January, the assignment was to create a full-page magazine illustration to accompany

How to include diversity in your illustration portfolio

Why should you show diversity in your illustration portfolio, and how can you do it? One of the incredible things about illustration is that it can shape how people see the world. An illustration portfolio which includes a wide range of diversity in terms of race, body types, ages, disabilities, family structures, gender expression and so on not only demonstrates technical skill, but so much more than that. Art from our FREE Black art history course, Redrawing Black History, by Make Art That Sells students (l-r) Cory Phillips, Ali Parks and Anne Bollman. Real life is diverse. Being able to show a variety of people in your artwork shows your awareness of the real world. People connect more deeply with your art when they can recognize themselves, their families and their experiences. Being able to see themselves in the worlds you draw creates emotional connection and trust. Representation matters! It’s
