Here is part 1 of Lilla’s Top Picks. Part 1 is from the January 2015 gallery with comments on each piece.

January

The January gallery features nearly 500 pieces of original art inspired by the January class assignment… a journal featuring Edwardian brooch-inspired imagery!

Well done to all who were chosen.

Lilla’s Comments: “Check out the diversity in media from digital to painterly, and the variety of styles from graphic to moody to quirky. This is a fabulous client presentation, along with a really fresh take on Edwardian insect brooches. I could see this picked up for a variety of products such as nesting tins and bolt fabric.”

JJ Galloway

Lilla’s Comments: “Placing the painterly, bold, gem-bordered heart on top of a tactile, weathered piece of burlap is a really edgy juxtaposition. This piece would read well small, too, which is key on social media. I might embroider the type at the bottom “my musings”.”

Kendra Binney

Lilla’s Comments: “While not a literal depiction of gems, the addition of the faceted, ghostly shapes adds to this dreamy piece. How about painting the signature at the bottom?”

Laurie Downing

Lilla’s Comments: “Besides the gorgeous symmetry and pretty colors, the embossed/letterpress look that Laurie created is show-stopping. Also, it’s nice to see the influence of the insect brooches and the filagree.”

Lilla’s Comments: “This is the kind of quirky originality that we love! The Edward Gorey-ish cat renderings are great. You can tell that the artist had fun with the project. I would totally buy this journal. #charmingeccentricity”
