Part 3 is from the April 2015 gallery with comments on each piece.
For this assignment, the students were asked to do a real live design for a poster for our Global Art Gathering in Brighton last year. (The artist’s piece that was selected would be paid for use of the art.) My advice was to create a poster that you would love to see on the wall of your favorite cafe, which would entice one to attend the event. In class, I gave examples of all kinds of vintage posters, and talked the artists through various styles of typography, poster design, and more.

Melissa Iwai
I love this piece for its style of art, but also it’s a super clear read of the main text, even with all the stuff going on. The story of “an international event” is communicated by the variety of languages being spoken in the speech bubbles. The painterly background color chunks add organization to the text and help make an easy read. The piece has a lot of energy (lots going on) and you get the feeling that Melissa had a great deal of fun making the piece, which is key when you want to communicate a fun event.

Gabriela Larios
The mass of faces at the bottom of this poster are super charming and amusing. It looks like they were cut out, which is cool, like funky paper dolls. The overall design of this poster is strong and would read well from a distance. Even though everyone had the same color palette to work with (as specified in the brief), I’m drawn to this one.

Maria Parrish
While the first two posters were more scenic, and created using traditional media, this piece is wholly digital and ultra-stylized. The symmetry is gorgeous, and the whole design is elegant. The execution is flawless. There’s tons of movement (the dotted white swirls, etc.) While it doesn’t communicate “Brighton”, it still would make me curious to find out more about the event because the poster is so fabulous.

Diane Neukirch
What a charming piece! I would submit this to a children’s book publisher as the animals are adorable characters, and well drawn.

Katie Vernon
This piece by Katie Vernon was selected as the winning poster. We loved the wit and edginess of the tattoos. All the information was communicated, yet in a very cool overall concept. The black tattoos pop against the light colored skin, which makes them read well from a distance. The watercolor is lovely. The woman is pretty yet badass, which we liked. This piece was selected as the winning piece for the poster! (Later in the year, Katie entered our
Global Talent Search, and won representation with my agency.)
