An editorial illustration must tell the story of the magazine manuscript in some way. It should add telling details, and do so in a visually engaging way. This Bootcamp assignment was about being a digital nomad—working remotely.

Anna Hokerberg
Here, Anna immediately communicates working away from the office, but more than that, she depicts the enviable life of the digital nomad. By positioning the character with a laptop on a mountaintop, the message of exotic work life comes through. Scale is achieved by illustrating the tiny house and trees on the bottom right. It makes the mountain appear larger as it reaches up into the clouds. Anna obviously had fun designing the mountain and sweater. Her quirky style is endearing.

Liz Alpass

By showing a woman on the beach using her phone and laptop, the story is told succinctly.

Nelleke Verhoeff

Here, Nelleke designed her charming illustration in a more conceptual way, with dots and lines showing connectivity.

Patty Rybolt

Patty makes use of hand-lettered text to enhance her illustration. A simple airplane on the upper left enhances the story of travel.

Tjarda Borsboom
Tjarda’s piece has such amusing detail! The little mobile hut sports an attached satellite dish, three clocks display different time zones, and even a password (‘wanderlust’) is taped to the wall. This kind of thinking adds so much to the manuscript. Your job as an illustrator is about story-telling.

Vanessa Waller
Vanessa’s charming drawing style and fabulous colors are appealing. The ‘wifi’ sign completes the story. Without it, the piece would simply be about a bike ride in the park. Sometimes all it takes is one little detail.
