Here’s your third and final GTS Prep mini: Draw some sea anemones! How cool are they? Seriously, to my eye they are hilarious and gorgeous at the same time. The purpose of this is to invite you to draw organic shapes. TIP: Think about shading, as that will help you define the form (the roundness). It’s time for our GTS Prep! We are so excited to launch our 5th Global Talent Search (GTS) which begins June 25th! Join in on the fun with my free prep—three days of mini assignments to get you warmed up and prepared for the first GTS assignment. Each of these is like a little hint, too. First up is “Let’s Make a Color”. Download this worksheet and paint right on it, or simply follow the instructions on a nice piece of paper. Use any medium you want. I am always encouraging you to use neutrals in your art, and to ‘shop’ for new colors to add to your repertoire. This playful worksheet should help you do just that. In the actual GTS assignment, you are going to be asked to use one of my favorite neutrals, so this is a warm up for that. (Can you guess the name of one of my favorite neutrals?)

Reading the tea leaves! See the varied approaches to the same assignment.

One of my favorite things about teaching MATS classes is being amazed at what my students do with the assignments I give them. I get to see all the beautiful work they make. Plus, I especially love to watch the growth of the students over time. In February, I gave our students an assignment to do a journal cover around the theme of reading tea leaves for our Assignment Bootcamp course. I give loads of visual inspiration, guidance, and advice, but then I encourage students to approach the assignment any way they like. Check out the diverse array of amazing work they did: Valerie Hamill Traci Sally Kelly LaPalme Rachael Grainger We’ve just released the March gallery from Assignment Bootcamp & you can take a look at even more gorgeous work by my students here. I can’t wait to see what else they create in the next months. Want to

I thought it would be really fun to pull a handout from the Illustrating Children’s Books course (which starts today!) and give it to you now so you could get started early. Download your free copy here. I made this unique handout for you specifically to help you choose which text to illustrate for the course. It focuses on examining your personality type, art style, and preferred art media. Let me give you some background about how I teach. One of the things that distinguishes my e-courses is that I’ve taught or mentored artists for four decades. I pride myself on knowing how to teach artists. It’s about deeply inspiring the artist so they dive right in. It about giving plenty of structure so they know where to go next. It’s about breaking things down into tiny bites so that the student feels a greater sense of calm. I understand

Alumni success ‘spotlight’ interview with Kate Mazeika

We are so proud of our Make Art That Sells Alumni, and we are pleased to feature a series of spotlight interviews showcasing their successes and artwork. We’ve asked them to share how the MATS courses have helped them learn and grow. You can see more Alumni Success stories here Today, we have an interview with Kate Mazeika  who has taken Illustrating Children’s Books class twice! 1. Tell us a little about how you got started in art and design… I knew I wanted to be an illustrator since high school when a local illustrator spoke to my art class about his job. I went to Columbus College of Art and Design and earned a BFA- my major was illustration. 2. Lilla always says “People buy your joy”. What brings you joy? I get a lot of joy from creating textures and playing with color. I also like to learn new skills/digital
