Imagine getting paid to make art all day, while your art agency promotes you, mentors you, negotiates fees and contracts, invoices the clients, and more? The 2018 Global Talent Search is officially open for registration! The GTS is a competition where we find our next artist to represent. We’ve already lined up lots of top names in the industry for our judging panel; we have judges from Blue Q, Abrams Books, Design House Greetings, Uppercase Magazine, Mattel, and many more! This year, in addition to winning representation and coveted Skype consultations with prime movers and shakers in the business we are delighted to also offer an all-expenses paid, (including airfare from anywhere in the world!), to my Annual Artists and VIP Retreat in my home/studio in Boston. Reading the tea leaves! See the varied approaches to the same assignment.

One of my favorite things about teaching MATS classes is being amazed at what my students do with the assignments I give them. I get to see all the beautiful work they make. Plus, I especially love to watch the growth of the students over time. In February, I gave our students an assignment to do a journal cover around the theme of reading tea leaves for our Assignment Bootcamp course. I give loads of visual inspiration, guidance, and advice, but then I encourage students to approach the assignment any way they like. Check out the diverse array of amazing work they did: Valerie Hamill Traci Sally Kelly LaPalme Rachael Grainger We’ve just released the March gallery from Assignment Bootcamp & you can take a look at even more gorgeous work by my students here. What makes a great pitch to an art director? Check out the work by our talented MATS students!

The amazing part about our Make Art That Sells courses is the variety of styles, media, color palettes and vibes of the work that the students create for class. It’s all about creating the right pitch for the right market, and I teach my students exactly how to do just that in my courses. Let’s take a look at some exciting art that our students did for our courses Make Art That Sells Part A and Part B. Party Paper (MATS Part B) is about making a gorgeous statement at an event. Here, Colleen Bringle did exactly what I constantly stress: vary the scale on each product, and change out the color palette while keeping the work in a consistent collection vibe (like, it all goes together well). Plus, a print is a great part of any product collection. It gives the art director a boat load of options for

As an art agent, what is the #1 question I’m asked? And a FREE Magic Style Potion worksheet for you!

Here is the number one question I’m asked. Ok, maybe it’s not number one, but it’s a huge one. “Lilla, how do I get a style?” The short answer is that the more art you do, over time your work will merge and meld into one cohesive look. Right now, you may be concerned that you have many different looks. In fact, that’s a good thing, because your style will pull in all those different parts to form one cool, special, unique style that is truly you. Maybe you already have a style but you want a style refresh, or are getting board. How do you learn more about yourself? Part of discovering—or refreshing—your style is about making discernments. What are discernments? They are thinking about what you like and why. It doesn’t have to be judge-y in a bad way. It can be about what you are drawn to
