Up your color game, grow your skills, and make your art even more gorgeous in Lilla’s brand NEW Color Quest course, which starts Monday, February 3rd. Don’t miss it – sign up here.

Color is one of the first ways that we respond to a piece of art, and it has a huge impact on the mood and tone of a piece. Plus even experienced artists can get stuck in a rut of using the same colors over and over again.

Lilla’s unique, innovative course will change all that and help you amp up your color toolkit! You’ll create 16 brand new beautiful color palettes to use in your art, plus four dreamy pieces of portfolio art designed to catch a client or art director’s eye. Plus using a range of colors and tones can massively improve the range and number of jobs you get, helping you to increase your income.

Today we’re sharing a little taste of the course so you can get an idea of the amazing assignments Lilla has created for you. You may have already seen or done this particular assignment as part of our fabulous Playbook & Planner, which is full of insightful worksheets, quizzes, downloads and more to boost your creative career – if you missed it, download your FREE copy here. Lilla has now added a little real-life commission twist to this assignment, just like the four BONUS real-life commission assignments you’ll get in class.

Plus in next week’s newsletter, we’ll be sharing another brand NEW real-life commission assignment Lilla has written for you to get you ready for class – don’t miss it!

Here’s your first assignment!

What happens when you get an Illustration commission? How do you figure out what color palette to use? Each project is very different.

Today we’re going to pretend that an art director just emailed you and they would love you to illustrate their newest chocolate package! They have just developed a new product: a brand new chocolate bar with fruity bits. They would like you to use bright, fresh colors with a lot of impact, but they also want it really pretty.

It’s your lucky day! You have this downloadable with colors that are perfect for the job.

Here’s today’s assignment! Click here to download your copy. You can print it out or work straight from the screen. You’re going to try to match the colors you can see in the image. Be sure to read to Lilla’s tips at the bottom of the page!

Some things to think about when you do this assignment:

Your colors don’t have to be a perfect match! Pigments sometimes can’t always give you exactly what you want. That’s fine! Anything you do is going to be fabulous because you’re going to be exploring and growing.

Working digitally? Simply grab the colours. The additional challenge for you will be to indicate the quantities of each color. For example, if you study the image and see that there’s a lot of purple throughout, then make a big square or blob of dark purple on your page. And then if you see a teeny tiny bit of lime green, make a teeny tiny box, or square or blob of lime green on your page, and so on.

You’ll get a total of 16 of these gorgeous Palette Finder assignments in Color Quest – one every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, plus, as we revealed in a newsletter a couple of weeks ago, a BONUS pretend assignment Palette Finder assignment every Thursday where you’ll learn how to apply your new skills to a real-life scenario.

The images are carefully curated by art agent Lilla to be visually appealing to keep you motivated and engaged – she’s spent hours researching and creating them, with subjects including quirky vintage ephemera, stylish clothing, charming old-fashioned tins, and Parisian hotel interiors – and cleverly designed to get increasingly complex as the course progresses and your skills improve.

Different ways to make your blobby palette by art agent Lilla

Lilla here. I’m excited to share today’s Palette Finder download for your MATS Prep! It’s a sneak peek at one of the course features, designed to give you a taste of what’s to come. Three days a week in class, you’ll receive a Palette Finder download with a gorgeous, hand-curated color image. I’ve carefully selected each image to introduce you to a wide variety of color palettes throughout the thirty days.

For each Palette Finder assignment, you’ll match colors by making blobs. Let me show you what I mean.

With each download, you’ll create blobs to match the colors. You’re free to interpret this in any way you like—there’s no wrong way to make your blobs.

Here are a few examples of blob pages I’ve created for different palettes. These are just suggestions:

1. Here are a few blobs that I’ve let bleed into one another, along with a splatter of pink.

2. Then, I didn’t want to stop so I took out another sheet of paper and just kept adding blobs.

3. Here’s a blob square:

4. Here’s a blob piece that I did for my column for Uppercase Magazine, with dip pen and ink lettering including a square blob.

I hope you find pleasure in the subtle art of color mixing and blob-making!
