Between them, Lilla and Zoë have decades of experience in the industry, and heaps of tips, advice and insight to share. Join them to chat everything about books and to help you choose between Lilla’s three wonderful book courses:

  • Illustrating Children’s Books: create a show stopping pitch for children’s book illustration that contains everything an art director wants to see
  • My Kid Book Pitch: write your very own unique picture book story – the story that only you can tell
  • NEW! My Arty Book Pitch: build a gorgeous pitch for your very own illustrated non-fiction book

Q: I’d love to pitch a gorgeous arty book, but I’m not really a writer. Can I still take My Arty Book Pitch?

A: Absolutely! The good news is that you don’t need to be a great writer: you only need to be passionate about your topic. Lilla will help you write it: she even has a technique like mad libs to help you fill out your book summary! Once you get a book deal, your editor will guide you along the way and help you to polish your writing, and your copy editor and proofreader will clean up your typos and grammar until your words shine.

Q: Do I need to write a large number of words for My Arty Book Pitch?

A: No. You can make a book primarily of your illustrations or your photographs. You can pitch a book of illustrated quotations; or some arty books, like journals, have very little text. Plus, you can just write little bundles of sentences for a chapter (art agent Lilla will explain more in class.)

Q: How about drawing? Do I need to be a professional illustrator to take My Arty Book Pitch?

A: No, at all! You can create a book that is entirely photography-driven, such as overhead flat lays step-by-step art technique or craft-making photos, travel shots, or other kinds of photographs. Sometimes the publisher will provide a professional photographer to shoot your work. Plus Lilla will show you a few books by people that clearly aren’t artists but still include their simple, non-professional, yet charming drawings.

Kay Meadows

Kay landed not one but two wonderful book deals after taking Illustrating Children’s Books, and found the confidence to think of herself as a picture book illustrator.

Kay told us: “Not long after Illustrating Children’s Books 2021, I went to an event and met a children’s book author there. I purchased a couple of his books and mentioned to him that I was going to put them in my collection of children’s books because I was hoping to illustrate children’s books one day. To my surprise, he said his publisher needed an illustrator and put me in contact.”
