Q. Hey Lilla! So how did the idea of Spring Break Art Camp come about?

A: Lilla says: “I did a live demo a little while ago that was super popular (if you missed it, catch up here). My students loved it and encouraged me to do more live demonstrations, so that’s how this idea came about. And I loved doing the demo because I could interact live with my students and they could ask me questions in the chat. I can’t wait to do more! Who knows what magic and mischief will happen?”

Q: It sounds great! What can students expect to get out of this three-day event? Why should they watch?

A: Lilla says: “I want to inspire you, delight you, and maybe show you some things you haven’t seen before, in nice tiny bite-sized bits. We’re going to try a bit of this, that and the other, we’re going to play with gouache and coloured pencils and dip pens …”

Q. So it sounds as though the focus will be on traditional media rather than digital?

A. Lilla says: “Yes, I want to encourage you to play with and fall in love with traditional media all over again. There’s an amazing beauty that you get when you mix water and pigment on paper and see what happens, and then you draw over it with a scratchy ink pen that splatters in a unique way and sinks into the paper, or you smudge a little pastel on top with your finger and it gets into the grooves of the paper – it’s such a sensual experience.”

Watch over Lilla’s shoulder as she shares LIVE art demos – join in at home or simply watch and enjoy. (If you missed Lilla’s earlier LIVE demo, catch up below. This was aired in February 2024)

Lilla adds: “It’s very, very calming. We are made to use our hands and to make things with our hands moving in different ways: dipping the brush in the water and blotting it off on the paper. We are made to watch what happens as we moisten the dried gouache and have it get first like sour cream and then mayonnaise and then soupy, and to watch that experience does something important to our souls. And not only is it therapeutic and stress reducing, but it’s also going to make your work more beautiful. That’s why I’d love for everyone to get involved, whether they usually work traditionally or digitally or a mixture of both.”

Q. Will there be something for digital artists too?

A: Lilla says: “Absolutely! I’d love for digital artists to join me and either join in themselves or just watch along to pick up some new ideas. I believe that there is an experience and an effect that you can only get from traditional media, but of course you can always create these gorgeous effects and colors and then import them into Photoshop or Procreate and use them to elevate your work that way. Spring Break Art Camp is for everyone!”

LILLA ART TABLE

Art materials at the ready! We’ll be sharing a suggested materials list nearer the time, but you can use anything you have to hand, or just watch along for inspiration, tips and ideas.

Q. Do I have to join in?

A. Lilla says: “No! You can totally just watch me make art and teach, and maybe jot down a few ideas that you want to try out for yourself.”

Q: Do I need any special materials?

A. Lilla says: “I’ll be sharing a list of materials nearer the time, but it’s just a suggestion and whatever you have to hand or want to use is fine. It’s going to be so fun, and I can’t wait to share Art Camp with you!”
