Claudia Marianno

Claudia’s creative career is soaring after she signed up for My Year of Art School, all because of art she created for Make Art That Sells assignments!

First, she got her first international children’s book illustration job after an author saw the art she created for our FREE art history class, Redrawing Black History, on Instagram.

Then Claudia landed two more children picture book illustration jobs for Brazilian publishers based on art she created for Bootcamp Special: Character Play.

Then the author of Melanin Pride asked her to illustrate her upcoming book, and she landed her first international editorial gig, for Storytime magazine, after they saw one of her illustrations for Illustrating Children’s Books.

Finally, a toy company spotted yet another of Claudia’s illustrations from Bootcamp Special: Character Play and hired her to be the illustrator for their next toy projects. Wow!

Claudia told us: “If it wasn’t for Make Art That Sells assignments, these jobs wouldn’t have happened: it’s like magic – of course, I worked hard too. In Brazil, unfortunately, I don’t have the opportunity to get to know these awesome markets.”

Claudia added: “Make Art That Sells was a great investment, and I followed everything Lilla said! I know it’s a process, and I keep improving my art day by day.”

Tammy Angelis

Tammy told us how transformative My Year of Art School has been for her.

Tammy told us: “I joined My Year of Art School to challenge myself to sample professional briefs, create work to a deadline and experience many types of media. I believed I was signing up to a schedule of work – but instead what I found was motivation to exceed expectations of myself, personal drive to learn and a complete overhaul of how I manage my energy. The weekly check-ins kept me honest because each Monday I had already planned out my proposed achievements. These all hung off a list of initial goals I had written up, which included ‘one strong piece from each module’.”

Tammy continues: “During the year I have cleared out physical clutter, prioritised relaxation and exercise, filled sketchbooks and found preferences for certain materials and themes. Along the way I also deprioritised. No more Netflix; I returned the keys to my allotment and started getting up before the rest of my household to have some thinking time. My natural rhythms became more apparent: times of high and low energy, when resting was more important than drawing something awful. Balancing the needs of my neurodiverse family against my own desire to progress.”

Tammy concludes: “When I started My Year of Art School, I was recovering from major surgery and as I finish the year, I have successfully returned to full time work. It would be wonderful to think that my dream of becoming a full-time paid illustrator by 2025 can stay on track.”

Colleen told us: “As an artist inspiration often comes from within. I was feeling a little burned out and uninspired. My agent passed away a few years ago and I knew I needed to update my portfolio so I could find new representation. I saw an email for Make Art That Sells classes, the universe (or maybe the MATS team) sent it at the perfect time! I signed up immediately and haven’t looked back.”
