Success stories
Sirjana Kaur
Sirjana got invited to pitch for a children’s book illustration gig and landed work with Cartoon Network, all based on art she created for Make Art That Sells!
Sirjana’s character sheet for Illustrating Children’s Books, which the publisher mentioned when they contacted her (left), and one of the sample illustrations she created for the brief (right).
Sirjana says: “A publisher got in touch with me in November to illustrate a sample pitch for a story they were developing about a girl who saw herself as a princess. They sent me the character sheet that I created for my first ever Make Art That Sells class as they really loved that character. Before starting the work, I went back to my Illustrating Children’s Books class and searched for the video where Zoë shared two sample pitches with us. That really helped me understand the structure and the amount of work needed.”

And that’s not all! Sirjana adds: “Shortly afterwards, I was contacted by Cartoon Network to do some character design freelance for a show currently in development. During the briefing, they mentioned the art which I created for a #MATSprep assignment for My Toy Pitch. This is definitely my dream job and I’m so thankful to you folks and your cracker assignments!”
Sirjana created this art for a FREE #MATSprep assignment for My Toy Pitch. She shared it on Instagram, where it was spotted by Cartoon Network, who then asked her to do some freelance character design.

Adam Ming
Adam also landed a book illustration deal as a direct result of art he created for Make Art That Sells! He’s taken a ton of Make Art That Sells courses, including signing up for My Year of Art School in 2021 (My Year of Art School is all of our courses for the entire year – if you like the sound of that, then check out My Semester of Art School, which is currently up to 40% off in our big Spring Sale!).

Adam told us: “I went to art school 20 years ago. I learned how to draw, paint sculpt and make a website. But I did not learn how to make a living as an artist. After taking a couple of Make Art That Sells classes in 2020, I was convinced to invest in My Year of Art School so that I could learn with and alongside the movers and shakers in the industry. My Year of Art School was my missing year of art school.”

Adam adds: “I felt like I took a risk going for a different style in the Editorial: Illustrating for Magazines and More class, but it landed me this amazing gig illustrating this middle grade book on such an important topic. This book is a direct result of one of the assignments for Editorial: Illustrating for Magazines and More. Lilla picked such a great text: the character from the editorial illustration (the one with the magnifying glass) is now on the cover! Also the pharaoh was a breeze to draw because of all the research I did for Cleopatra and Mr Tibbles for Illustrating Children’s Books. Apart from this book I also landed an agent and some secret projects which I will be able to reveal at a future date!”

Barbara Nigg
Barbara recently landed an amazing book deal – but as an author, not an illustrator! She told us: “Taking Make Art That Sells courses definitely helped me get this job and market the book. ‘People buy your joy’ isn’t just a tagline! Make Art That Sells made a huge impression on me, gave me confidence, and shaped how I approached the project, thanks to the skills and tools I picked up in MATS MBA.
Barbara with the book she worked on.
Barbara told us: “50 Amazing Swiss Women: True Stories You Should Know About was published in February 2021 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of women’s right to vote here in Switzerland. We chose a very diverse group of women from different racial backgrounds, abilities and professions to write about, both famous and not. We wanted to celebrate what women can do and inspire young girls In Switzerland with stories and illustrations of Swiss women who did all kinds of super cool things. With just three months to write it, illustrate it, and translate it into German and French, it was quite an achievement! I’m thrilled to say it’s a bestseller here, and you can also find copies in Burma, Cuba, South Africa, Singapore, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, USA, France, Germany, Portugal, Dubai, UK and more!”
One of Barbara’s full page spreads for Illustrating Children’s Books. Illustrating Children’s Books 2022 starts May 23rd – sign up now and save 20%!
Barbara adds: “Two years of Illustrating Children’s Books gave me insight into the children’s book market so I could write in a way that fit my audience and work with the publisher in a professional manner: I knew what to expect thanks to Lilla and Zoë.”

Alicia Rogerson
Alicia won a spot in MATS MBA (Money BadAss), and found it so valuable she then signed up for My Year of Art School in 2021. She landed gigs to illustrate not one but THREE books in 2021 alone!

Alicia told us: “When I was contacted to illustrate my first children’s books I didn’t hesitate, and having three to work on was just incredible! I remembered the key words of Lilla’s were to live your passion, embrace opportunities and be confident. Illustrating the books was just wonderful and I was able to apply many things that I’d been taught, but also observed. Make Art That Sells courses have helped my characters gain identity and strength, and allowed my illustrations to connect to viewers emotionally as well as relaying important messages. One Potoroo was awarded a Notable in 2022 from the Children’s Book Council of Australia, and I’m often told how the story brings tears of joy to the reader.”
