Zoë Tucker, the children’s book art director and author who co-teaches Illustrating Children’s Books alongside top art agent Lilla Rogers, wrote Grandma’s Garden for the students in class in 2018. The story has now been published as The Garden We Share by NorthSouth, illustrated by Julianna Swaney, and has already been chosen as a Kids’ Indie Next Pick for March 2022. That tells you that the texts you’re going to get in class are top notch! Read more about Zoë’s latest book here.

This is the third story that Zoë originally wrote for our students in Illustrating Children’s Books to be turned into a book. Ada Lovelace and the Number Crunching Machine, written by Zoë and illustrated by Make Art That Sells student Rachel Katstaller, was published in fall 2019, after Rachel took the art she created in class to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, where it was picked up by a publisher. Here’s another example of how fabulous the texts you get in class are. Greta and the Giants, another text that Zoë wrote for students in Illustrating Children’s Books, was published at the end of 2019, illustrated by Zoe Persico. Since then, Zoë has written a number of books for the Friends Change the World series for Quarto Kids’ Wide Eyed Editions, including We are the Beatles, We are the Supremes, We are the NASA Scientists and We are the Apollo 11 Crew.

As well as being a fantastic picture book author, Zoë also has years of experience as a children’s book art director, working with top author-illustrators such as Axel Scheffler, Nick Sharratt, Helen Stephens, and Guy Parker-Rees, and artist Tisha Lee, a Make Art That Sells student who is now represented by Lilla after Lilla discovered her in class.

In other words, when you sign up for Illustrating Children’s Books, you get:

  • A choice of three professional level texts written by Zoë (plus a handy Text Chooser to help you make the difficult decision – and of course you can always repeat the course with the other texts in your own time)
  • Tons of insider tips and insight from a professional picture book author and art director
  • The opportunity to get your art directly in front of top art agent Lilla, who co-teaches the course, and who is always looking for new artists to represent (she’s already announced representation for two Make Art That Sells students in 2022 alone, with more in the pipeline)

– plus of course weekly assignments, live reviews, downloadable worksheets, daily drawing prompts, and lots more that will help you build a kickass pitch presentation in just five weeks. What other course offers all this?!
