Patricia Lebedel

I choose this collection may be because it’s the first of the course (METAL) and I find it very friendly.

Sophie Dufresne | Sophiequi

Inspired by California quails and desert flora, my collection was designed for patio living but can be used just as well inside the home. Quails are very funny, not only because of their comical plume on the head but also because of how they behave. They love to hang out in groups, shake their belly on the ground for a dust bath and prefer to run off on foot rather than fly.

As products these quirks translates into textiles of birds standing around desert flowers, a metal lantern and glass serving bowl with quail couples, a ceramic tea set for party of four, and a wooden screen and stool with patterns that evokes their running around.:

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?

Thanks to the class I went from mainly thinking of art on products applied on flat surfaces to considering all three dimensions of a product, what material it’s made of, and how it’s fabricated. Not only taking into account the art but the shape of the object as well, and creating collections instead of single products. That’s pretty big already, but another huge thing the class helped with was getting more comfortable with mockups and presentations, in large part because of the quantity of objects to present and also because of the diversity of products and materials.

What did you discover about yourself?

With the home decor market I discovered influences from the things I grew up with, my family’s tastes, and what I surround myself with nowadays. Maybe we all are more or less subject to cultural influences when it comes to products for the home.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

An intense and fun ride! The course is a step up from other courses because now we’re talking product design and whole collections. With Margo on board we get first hand material and tips from an art director send ready work to art directors. Each week she teaches us everything about a different material: metal, fabric, glass, ceramics, and wood. We get examples of how to apply our designs but we’re also encouraged to come up with new ideas and products. If we can dream it, and most importantly draw it, the sky’s the limit! The Facebook group is a feast for the eyes. There are also interviews with experts and tons of inspiration and creative tips from Lilla.

Kathryn Cole

Inspired by floral arranging and gardening, I created this Garden Love collection with watercolors and calligraphy. It is my favorite because I loved the combination of the calligraphy and the florals together.

Lynn Gaines | Lynn Gaines Design

This piece is a composite of all 5 weeks and substrates we got to explore in class – Metal, Glass, Ceramic, Fabric and Wood. We were given a mood board to inspire us and here’s my result! I love seeing the whole collection come together – I showed myself that I can produce a cohesive voice across products retaining my unique vision :)

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?

I learned to take all my skills and apply them to a whole new realm of products- getting to consider all the different substrates was a great challenge also – in a good way! :)

What did you discover about yourself?

That I can think 3 dimensionally with my art

How would you describe the course to a friend?

If you’ve taken MATS classes before this is different- it’s a concentrated focus about art on products, stretching what you’ve already learned and ramping it up a notch. This course will take everything you’ve ever learned and apply it in a fresh way- like Grad school for MATS, yet even if you haven’t taken a MATS course you can’t help but learn- GO FOR IT!!!

Sandrine Monnier

I made this during one of my favorite week: ceramic. The mini was about lettering. It’s one of my favorite because I really love playing with letters and typography. I tried and I mixed a lot of different media: black pencil, watercolor, ink and I am pleased with the final result. This is exactly the kind of experiment which helped me to find my style and to grow.

How did the Home Décor class help you grow?

I tried different media and my classmates were so talented it was a great motivation for me to define my own style.

What did you discover about yourself?

I discover that I love doing hand lettering and pattern and like to see my design on real product.

How would you describe the course to a friend?

If you take this course you will see home décor in a different way. There is so much information in the course that you need to manage some time to make the most of it. It’s a good investment.
