Next Monday we begin Make Art That Sells: Creating Collections for Home Décor, and I sure hope that you’re as excited as I am!
What you’ve been doing for the Mini Prep has been to create awareness so that when you sit down to make your collection, you are a more savvy, unique designer.
If you haven’t signed up already, get crackin’ here because it all begins on Monday.
I’m really excited about today’s Mini Prep assignment. You’re going to create assets for your work in class. You’ll understand what I mean in a moment.
Texture is a key feature of home décor products, as you have learned so far this week. Imagine that you’re designing products; let’s say you’re designing a tray for example. Is it made of wood? Distressed wood? Painted wood? Metal? Is it woven like a basket? See what I mean? It’s about surfaces. Textures. They make things a whole lot more interesting.
Today I want you to go around and photograph some textures. If you work digitally, these will be great for you to use in making your products more exciting.
Here are some photos from around my house that I literally took in about 5 minutes.
Look at this gorgeous hunk of distressed metal.

Here’s my wood floor.
A wood cabinet painted green
My overdyed rug
Pink sandstone with raindrops outside on my front steps
My floor mat
My mail basket
I think you’ll be amazed at what you find all around you.
You get extra credit if you combine four textures on one page like this:
Looking forward to seeing what you photograph!
And that takes care of this Mini Prep week. Hope you had fun and gained some insight. I will keep looking at Instagram for a few more days to give you time to upload your images. Thanks for delighting me with your awesomeness. See you in class! (Starts Monday, so get to it and join us! Sign up here.)
