I am taking both MATS A and B. My work above is for the Paper Market in MATS B
What have you enjoyed most so far about the course?

I enjoyed everything, from the minis, to the great Lilla advices, and being inspired and supported from a great community.

How is the MATS class helping you grow?

I feel MATS shows us some direction and you only need to dive in. I think that’s what’s so fun about it,  you can be yourself all the time,as long as you understand the market. I must say it’s not easy, I struggle at some points but I’m able to find support and motivation through MATS so I’m sure the efforts are worth it. After I started the course I won the Make it in Design Scholarship 2016 , and I know MATS gave me the confidence for that too.

What are you discovering about yourself?

I got involved with art as an adult. I mean, I always loved making art but it was forgotten somewhere when I was growing up. So, when I started painting as an adult I wanted to do the best art I could. I aimed to be very realistical at the beginning, which was great for learning some techniques. I painted a lot of botanical and portraits. Than I felt I wanted to have more fun and make art that was more like me, and reflected my own voice.

That’s when I found about MATS. I feel like I’m having fun just the way I did when I was child drawing animals and mermaids.I already enjoyed making art but now I do love it so much more, because I can see myself in my work. Even though I know I need to grow so much more t I feel like everything is going in the right direction for me , and that’s such a big thing. It all started with MATS.

How would you describe the class to a friend?

I think MATS classes are an injection of motivation, fun activities and support. It gives you the tools to improve our art carreer in many levels.

I am new to taking MATS B.  The piece I chose to submit is for the baby apparel market (mini assignment).

What have you enjoyed most so far about the course?

So far I just love all the videos Lilla posts! I find it much more personal than just reading from a computer screen.  I actually feel connected to her in a way, and totally dig the more ‘woowoo series.’

How is the MATS class helping you grow?

The Mats is helping me grow, and understand each market.  Lilla’s has great insights, tips and excellent assignments to build a strong portfolio.

What are you discovering about yourself?

Before this course, I was in a creative rut, however I am feeling more inspired which is really awesome.  I totally believe in intuition and the universe will guide me on this creative journey…

How would you describe the class to a friend?

I have already described this course to a girlfriend and told her how amazing it is, and really want you to go ahead with the new book illustration course!

I’m taking MATS B and my piece is for Editorial

What have you enjoyed most so far about the course?

I’ve enjoyed the styles of assignments we’ve been given. They’re both trendy and fresh at the same time!

How is the MATS class helping you grow?

MATS has helped me with getting over the fear of sharing my work. I’m a naturally guarded person and it can be really scary to show someone a piece, however the MATS community and philosophy is so positive and welcoming that I’m becoming more confident.

What are you discovering about yourself?

I’m discovering that I really benefit from being in an artistic community, and having some accountability and deadlines that go with it.

How would you describe the class to a friend?

I would describe the class as a chance to gain valuable insight about, and create art for markets that lots of people aren’t even aware of. Also, as an opportunity to push yourself (through the assignments), and to evaluate where you stand and the path you might want to go down (through Lilla’s talks and affirmations). And it’s fun!

Lisa Nishimura

I am taking MATS self-paced B right now but I plan on going back and doing A once I’m finished. I’ve submitted work for the Scrapbooking market.

What have you enjoyed most so far about the course?

The thing that I enjoy most about these courses is the variety of projects we get to work on.

How is the MATS class helping you grow?

The MATS classes are pushing me out of my comfort zone and making me draw things I wouldn’t normally draw and experiment with new media.

What are you discovering about yourself?

I’m discovering that I am capable of a lot more than I give myself credit for.

How would you describe the class to a friend?

These classes and the community are life-changing and will give you the confidence and ability to tackle any project – big or small.
