Maruga has taken a ton of Make Art That Sells courses, including Illustrating Children’s Books twice, Hot Markets for Your Art Part A and Part B, Assignment Bootcamp, Editorial: Drawing for Magazines and More, Lilla’s Art Recipes: Drawing Faces and MATS MBA (Money BadAss) and she’s currently taking My Kid Book Pitch.

MATS: Which course was your favorite, and why?

Maruga says: “If I really had to choose, Illustrating Children’s Books and Assignment Bootcamp are my favorites. Illustrating Children’s Books was a game changer for me. It contains so much information and in a short time you learn everything you need to know to illustrate and pitch a children’s book. I learned so much from the feedback from Lilla and Zoë in the weekly live reviews. And Assignment Bootcamp because of the variety and inspirational assignments. But I have learned a lot from all of the courses that I’ve taken.”

MATS: How have the classes helped you evolve/grow?

Maruga says: “The courses helped me to grow because they contain so many examples and so much background information. Lilla’s way of teaching is so stimulating. The feedback in the live reviews is very valuable, but the feedback from and the work of the other students who follow the course also help me to look at my work again and improve. Oh yes, and the assignments are so inspiring.”

MATS: What was the best or most valuable thing you learned from Make Art That Sells?

Maruga says: “The most valuable thing I learned from Make Art That Sells courses is that by putting a lot of time into my art, my skills grow naturally. And that by starting with the mini assignment everything becomes much clearer in my sometimes chaotic brain: Lilla’s approach really works!”

Maruga says: “I can’t even describe how I felt. At first disbelief, and then enormous joy with accompanying tears.”

MATS: What brings you joy?

Maruga says: “My husband and two daughters, walking in nature and of course drawing: if I can’t draw, I really don’t feel happy – it’s kind of my addiction!”

MATS: What’s your best tip or piece of advice for Make Art That Sells students?

Maruga says: “Keep believing in yourself! Dreams can come true if you set yourself goals and put the time and energy into them.”

Charlotte has taken Illustrating Children’s Books twice, and Hot Markets for Your Art Part A and Part B.

MATS: Which course was your favorite, and why?

Charlotte says: “My first Illustrating Children’s Books course was a gift to myself, as I really wanted to explore that area and just draw for fun. Even before the official class started, I could feel that this class was something special because of the preps, which got me even more excited. I could just feel that Lilla and Zoë had put their heart and soul into this jam-packed class and its assignments. It didn’t matter what level you were at: Lilla created a happy place for all of us.”

Charlotte adds: “By breaking the assignments down into tiny bits, she made the process easy and enjoyable. She’s also incredible at giving illustration tips and tricks, and passionate about how to get yourself in a good mindset so that you can have a whole lot of fun and make your best work.”

Finally she adds: “Beside all that, the Facebook group and being able to talk directly with other course members about the process is invaluable. Imagine a buzzing group of creatives who talk about struggles and solutions of the same creative process, showing each other sketches, work in progress, inspiration and more. It felt like a big warm bath. The support is really amazing and one of a kind.”

MATS: What is your favorite piece of work from a Make Art That Sells course?

Charlotte says: “For the first Illustrating Children’s Books class, I chose the storyline Pet Problems and it was perfect for me. All these character poses, emotions and animals kept coming out of my pencil at an unstoppable speed, and my heart burst open with gratitude. A whole new world spoke through my pencil. I felt I was in my best creative happy place for the first time of my life. The joy I felt during that course made me decide to change career and start seeing myself as a picture book illustrator.”

MATS: How have the classes helped you evolve/grow?

Charlotte says: “Lilla’s class made me realize it was ok to draw cute stuff and enjoy it. I am pretty sure I wouldn’t have been a professional illustrator without Lilla’s classes. They led me to switch careers and become determined to become a picture book illustrator.”

MATS: What was the best or most valuable thing you learned from MATS?

Charlotte says: “Lilla saying: People buy your joy. That brings me back to my core every time I am stuck during the creative process.”

MATS: How did you feel when Lilla got in touch to discuss representation?

Charlotte says: “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Being represented by the person who changed my life and understands my business the best is a dream come true. I feel super grateful, excited and stronger with her and her team beside me. I can’t wait to see what it will bring us.”

MATS: What brings you joy?

Charlotte says: “My home attic studio, getting e-mail from potential new assignments, developing fun characters who are my new best friends and who take me on their adventures. But also looking at my kids when they’re in their element. My son loves to ice skate and he’s an acrobat on the trampoline. My daughter wants to become an art teacher and I love watching her when she’s creating. We have made her her own creative spot. Laughing with my husband: he has been an incredible support for 15 years. But also traveling, walking on bare feet, seeing friends in a city park, nature walks with my dog who thinks he’s a circus act 24/7. Did I mention chocolate yet?”

MATS: What’s your dream job?

Charlotte says: “Such a fun question. I am already so grateful that I get to illustrate picture books, which is a dream. But it would also be a dream seeing my characters transformed into toys, a play garden or come alive in a theme park!”

MATS: What’s your best tip or piece of advice for Make Art That Sells students?

Charlotte says: “It’s the best gift you could give yourself. Plan to work on it a few hours a day and you’ll really be amazed how quickly you will grow in such a short time.”
