Learn how to get paid for illustrating children’s books!

Our hugely popular online course, Illustrating Children’s Books, starts May 20th

Meet the TWO Make Art That Sells students now represented by Lilla Rogers

If you caught the recent free live Zoom event hosted by art agent Lilla and creative director and smash hit game creator Riley (and if you didn’t then you really should – catch up here) then you may already know that Lilla Rogers Studio is now representing yet another Make Art That Sells student – but Lilla actually offered representation to TWO more students (with a couple more in the pipeline!), and we’re thrilled to introduce them both today.

Watch the moment when Lilla accidentally revealed her new artist in our recent live Zoom event below. You never know what will happen in a live Zoom! Join us for our next one on Friday, April 29th – details below.

These are the first two students to be offered representation by Lilla so far in 2022, but we’re confident they won’t be the last – she took on a huge EIGHT students in 2021 alone, and these two bring the total number to a massive 31 since Make Art That Sells started in 2013!

Want to land representation with Lilla’s innovative art agency? The odds are pretty good! Every live course means that art agent Lilla will be looking directly at your art, so every course is an opportunity to catch her eye – as well as the chance of getting spotted by new agent Riley, art director Zoë Tucker or creative director Margo Tantau.

Maria has taken Illustrating Children’s Books, Editorial: Illustrating for Magazines and More and Assignment Bootcamp, and is currently taking part in Character Play Bootcamp.

MATS: Which course was your favorite, and why?

Maria said: “If I have to choose, I think it’d be Illustrating Children’s Books! The course is packed with useful information. It is five intense weeks of productivity, and in this short period of time I learned what a strong portfolio is all about. Their valuable insights definitely changed the way I view the children’s book market. I also love the way Lilla and Zoë break down the assignments, and the stories they provide are truly inspiring!”

MATS: What was the best/most valuable thing you learned from MATS?

Maria said: “That if I keep practising, I will get better at my art. Seems very obvious, but that kept me motivated to improve my work. To be quite honest, the pieces I did in the beginning needed improvement, and that can make you feel down sometimes, but I kept trying and practising, and eventually I ended up with better pieces that made me happy.”

MATS: How did you feel when Lilla got in touch to discuss representation?

Maria said: “I was in disbelief! I got very overwhelmed with the offer and I couldn’t contain my happiness. It was very surreal to think Lilla would offer me representation, because she was the one that made me aware that artists could have agents in the first place, so it’s crazy to think I am now represented by her Studio. I feel very lucky!”

MATS: What brings you joy?

Maria said: “When people, especially children, see themselves in the characters I illustrate. I know how representation in the media matters – when I was little, whenever I saw a character that looked like me somewhere, I clung to it with all my heart. And I want to do that with my art, I want to be able to represent all kinds of people and make them feel connected to it. This brings me the most joy!”

MATS: What’s your best tip or piece of advice for Make Art That Sells students?

Maria said: “Don’t give up! Art is a process, if you put your heart and mind into it, you will eventually get where you want to be. You just need time, patience and most importantly, you need to enjoy what you’re doing. As Lilla says ‘People buy your joy!’.”

Brian Lambert

Brian has taken the Editorial: Illustrating for Magazines and More, My Toy Pitch, Assignment Bootcamp, and our FREE art history course, Redrawing Black History.

MATS: Which is your favorite, and why?

Brian says: “Such a hard choice, but I think I’m going to go with My Toy Pitch just because of how fun it was. It also resulted in the Cattoo Cats (AKA the Pirate Cats), which I’m extremely proud of.”

MATS: How have the classes helped you evolve/grow?

Brian says: “I’ve really tried to take to heart all the advice Lilla and the crew give in the classes. It’s made me really push myself to improve beyond what I would have ever been able to do by my lonesome. It’s also really made me see and appreciate how much I still have to learn and grow, which as an artist is exciting. I always want my next piece to be my best one ever, and these classes have made me feel as though I really can continue to improve. They’re constantly showing and teaching me new things. Plus they’ve exposed me to so many other amazing artists, all of whom also motivate and inspire me.”

MATS: What brings you joy?

Brian says: “I feel it’s cheating to say drawing, even though it’s true, so I’ll choose something else. Well, a lot of things bring me joy. My relationship with my wife, my cat, my family, staring out at the ocean with a cup of hot coffee in my hand. Watching clouds of mist brush past the hilltops just outside my window, reading fantasy and history books, playing video games with my friends or occasionally with my wife on the couch next to me. The way Anthropologie smells when you first walk in, the way a coffee shop that roasts their own coffee smells, the smell of spring rain (admit it, it’s better in the spring). I could probably go on and on. The world is pretty awesome!”

MATS: What’s your dream job?

Brian says: “My current dream is to get a writer/illustrator gig for a children’s book of my own. But, if I’m being honest, that’s just one of many dream jobs. I mean, what artist doesn’t dream of having their art on a bunch of dinnerware in Anthropologie or getting to do an illustration for the New Yorker?!”

Thanks both and congratulations again!
